QUOTE(tjaliwalpa @ May 1 2008, 08:06 AM)
eye30,

We need interim service (oil & filter change) due to harsher conditions.

Bob

True Bob, but after the motor gets run in if you use really high quality synthetic oil you can go 15,000k just that type oil is not cheap, also all synthetic oil is not the same some are only part synthetic, i'm talking about full synthetic. but heat kill's oil! no mater if it is mineral or synthetic heat is the killer. Dazz would be ok with 15,000 interval, and here in winter might be ok if they use good oil but each dealer use different oil as i've seen that already. but that is not a bad thing as look at MB & VW they tell you you have to use the one brand oil or void warranty and that one brand has its price inflated, and i don't beleave the reasoning they use.
cheers
ps Bob i like to buy my own oil and supply it to the dealer to be used in my car or truck just so i know what it has in the motor. so i get what ever oil meets there requirement, this system has always worked for me and i've had some high mileage trouble free motors over the years.
cheers

Here a my thoughts on oil changes.

Remember how black and yucky the diesel engine makes the oil. All diesels do it. I don't mind paying a little extra to have that oil drained and replaced more frequently, regardless of how good the oil is.

Just my thoughts.

Bob

Hi Folks,

Here's my 2 cents worth.

I usually buy the genuine filter and either the genuine oil or a good equivilent (I like Castrol Magnatec which I can usually get for around $27 on special although the diesel version is probably a bit dearer - plus you need slightly more than 5 litres I believe)

Like I've said previously I get a good deal from a locally owned national service centre and buying my own filter and oil on special seems to help as well (and as lakes says at least you know whats going in)

Have always gone in between compulsory services for an oil and filter change with every 2nd one coinciding with the official service. Seems to work out that I get the two services for about the price of a normal dealer one.

Cheers,

Dazz

Thank you all for the service info. I have started emailing a few dealers for quotes and will let you know if I end up buying (that's if I don't think of loads more questions in the meantime which is highly likely). Has anyone had any good results using any of the Australian car broker companies? I'm wondering if it's worth doing if the car is as popular a seller as it seems to be given that they all seem to charge a few hundred dollars fee for a completed sale?

Hi Guys (& Jess)

Been researching oils for the diesel (good ones are dear but perhaps not as dear as what they slugged Bob... $84.50! Black Gold, Texas Tea indeed

The magnatec might be a bit exy...

Apparently premium oils like these are suitable for Diesel and Unleaded...

Did some more checking on oils today...

Shell helix ultra is $55.95 or thereabouts for 5 ltrs at supercheap and

$57.95 at K-mart (supercheap had 1 ltr of Helix ultra on special for $11.95)

Think Autobarn has 5 ltrs for $49 at the moment -didn't get back in there (might grab some next time I see it under $50 and grab another ltr from supercheap at $11.95 but will check out a couple of bigger petrol stations prices first.)

Mobil 1 would possibly be ok too but it's about $65 and doesn't mention diesels on the container.

You can see I only work part-time..I like shopping

Cheers,

Dazz

Dazz, for what it's worth, a guy i know that has a MB sprinter TD has run Shell oil in it for 250,000 said no problem. but not sure what shell oil he uses. i have never used shell b4 but my car has a shell service sticker on it from new, might be just from dealer. i like Redline Oil but it is too expencive for the i30 that would be like putting perfume on a pig :)
Cheers m8

Geez you're a sweet talker John...

Whispering sweet nothings in our ears about our beloved little car (calling it a PIGGG!!! - as my wife would say ...very naughty) :puzzled:

Royal Purple Synthetic Oil apparently outperformed a lot of top name oils in a recent test by some association ... hadn't heard of it before.

This is their website (will check it out when I get a chance)

www.royalpurple.com.au

Cheers,

Dazz

P.S. I forgive you

A few more (non oil related!) questions about the Oz spec manual 1.6 CRDi SLX which I am currently negotiating a price on.

Thinking of adding headlamp protectors to the options. Anyone got them? Do they affect the beam much? Are they worth having? Are the headlamps glass or polycarbonate?

Secondly, does the CRDi SLX have dashboard illumination adjustment?

Next question, does anyone know any more about the manual 1.6 diesel SLX having factory cruise control from May 2008 build on? Will this be standard or an option? The dealers I've spoken to either swear blind it's not happening or have emailed Hyundai and are 'waiting to hear'...

As ever, thanks for anyone who takes the time to answer these queries.

I have ordered mine with the head light and the bonnet protectors . The head lamps are as is most new cars these days polycarbonate. They wont affect the beam at all. Cannt help on the other questions till i get my i30.

I've joined the club!

Thanks to everyone on here for their help and advice. Placed an order with a Sydney dealer yesterday for a steel grey i30 1.6CRDi SLX manual with protectz pack, iPod cable and headlight protectors. Dealer has confirmed it will come with factory cruise control, 2 remote flip keys and a full tank of fuel. That's the good news, bad news is I've been told it will be 'at least' 3 months for delivery, possibly even September :w00t: Let's hope the dealer was just being a bit pessimistic...

Don't mind a bit of a wait as I won't be in the country until July. My new employer will cover two weeks car rental when I arrive and then I'll meet lots of cab drivers for a few weeks.

stevep,

You lucky bugger, getting cruise control. We'd love that, but oh well, best things come to those who wait.

We had to wait 3 months after ordering back in early December.

Anyway, good to see you have committed to the Hyundai i30. We love the car and you will to. And you'll be an Ozzie in no time (pity Shambles can't join you - us)

Bob

Hi Stevep

Great news  , would have answered your queries but missed your posting until now.

I'm not a big fan of headlight covers myself think you do lose a bit of light and found bonnet protectors (as per mullet's order) to be a leaf catcher (but each to his own)

All modern cars in Aus (including the i30) have adjustment for instrument illumination. Personally I would like them to go a bit brighter at dusk and someone on the forum thought their low wasn't low enough...

Sounds like you're on a winner  - pity about the wait.

Cheers,

Dazz
