Hi all, up early here, i'm going to drive the i30 to work, as i have to go to other side of Sydney to a friends after work to pick up parts, for a friend thats coming up from Melbourne Friday.
so as i'll use one of the motorways i can test cruise control but traffic will be heavy, but moves at about 80kph too 100kph just have to watch sometimes as slows down fast but don't ask me why? but as i'm used to CC no problem, just still getting used to the new car. i'll see my mad mate the Italian upholsterer while i'm out there see if he can put quality carpet in and quality seat covers as i like his high quality craftsmanship and he keeps the best in stock does good work. might just get him to make them like mats in the front.
anyway i'll let you know how it all goes with cruise control.
by the way had my GPS in the car and the speedo it fast, the trip or odometer is fast too, so a trip computer could not be accurate till that is sorted out so what you see as your average fuel useage be it petrol or diesel will in fact be showing less than you are actually useing. but this is normal you see most cars have fast speedo's and the odometer goes fast , but with my falcon it takes hundreds of miles to see the odometer go a few k's faster than the GPS shows, with this i30 SX it shows in only 15k so it's bad! will check tyre diamiters and distance in a roll from the different tyre sizes they come with but Hyundai will have to fix this, as service intervals come up too fast!!

Hi John,

Sounds like you're having fun!

Bob tested his odometer against his GPS with the 16" tyres and apparently it wasn't too bad. Like I've said before my Speedo over reads by about 5km at 100 kms (but that's pretty normal) Apparently this can be independent of the odometer accuracy. I'm not getting enough sleep at the moment to be bothered trying to work out that concept... :crying:

Keep us posted with your experience with the cruise. I would have liked it but find my diesel one of the easier cars to keep at a consistent speed.

Cheers,

Dazz

Great stuff John. Any chance in your travels you can take a photo of the cruise buttons on your steering wheel, and upload it together with your analysis of its operation?

Some time ago I investigated the idea of cruise contol to see what options were available as after market add ons. Came up with one Australian product where they had an option of to using OEM switches to control their after market cruise control. I guess the big issue would be sourcing the Hyundai switches to fit the steering wheel. And I wonder what that would cost?

I shall have another search for the info on the web tonight as I can't seem to locate it at the moment.

Bob,
I think the buttons should be fairly easy. I would be very interested to see what you come up with re after market control box and then use the OEM buttons. I am handy with a soldering iron so would prefer to get the factory buttons rather than the after market one..

Hey Dazz,
Well you know how it is, when you get something new you jump to conclusions sometimes with out really waiting to fully test something.
well seems that's what i did, the first drive home from dealer was under pressure to get home quick, try to be nice to my new baby :) and was hard to explain, but i get up early today to go to work, i fire up the i30, no smoke no smell she fires up and runs at a fast idle no worries, i have to move my V8 ute as she was behind silver, i move the Ute out leave it idle, move silver out leave it Idle walk behind the Ute she is making a smell from idling rich while cold and warming up , Poo smelt bad! put the ut back in garage walk behind silver no smell at all, leave her idle 10 minutes to warm up, drive to work 17k check GPS not much difference to speedo readout so minimal error so far. she felt nicer to drive today and took a corner at medium speed and i pushed her a bit in the corner she felt ok, steering not perfect but its nice to drive, Tyres feel ok now. then after work drive out to friends useing motorway i have to get a tag for silver, so had to pay and the window tint has put tape on my power window buttons don't use for 48 hours so had to hop out car to pay :) well on the motorway traffic was heavy but i used the cruise control and it worked great very much like what i'm used too four buttons one on one off one speed up one to slow down pluss they have other functions, i even tried it at 50k up a hill on normal roads with traffic worked fine, touch brake it goes off. will take pic's next week.
now i have 100k and the GPS shows only about half a k less so i was wrong it is minimal about same as my Ute, that would be about average for most cars i would say. fuel gauge still reading full how long do they take to move?

Lakes,

Re the fuel guage:
When I filled ours to the brim, I drove for hundred of km before it started to drop noticably.

Speedo:
Seems your speedo is more accurate than ours, but the odometer is about the same. From memory, less than a km out in about 80km.

Cruise Control:
Well, that seems to be a winner with you. Can't wait for the pics. I'm still trying to find the website that mentioned an option of using OEM controls, but I can't find it. I had a favourite saved but deleted it a few weeks back thinking I wouldn't want it. "DUMBER than DUMB".

Bob thanks again for all your help, and advice as you have a lot more experience with the car so very helpfull to me and any new owner to have you here to explaine things. you seem to be like me i like to get the tank full to the top and see just how far i can go on the tank, as i like to get full useage on long trips to cut trip times also try for maxium economy from smooth driving, its just as hard to drive smooth and just as much of a challenge as it is to drive fast.
i'm really happy with the car and today i saw two silver i30's seems to be a lot all of a sudden, also had other drivers matching my speed just looking at the car, got all possitive coments from work Colleagues. also talked to high mileage CRTD drivers that have lots of experience with Turbo Diesel's they all say warm them up b4 driving and let them idle for three to five minutes b4 turning off. i have done this and when i started up this morning there was no black smoke and no smell at all.

bdennis,

I think it might have been this website:
http://www.cruisecontrol.com.au

Another one I have found is website:
http://www.autron.com.au

The last one does not mention anything about genuine switches, but has different switch options including a stalk and a dash mounted switch.

Both have fly by wire products.

Bob

Have called my local dealer and asked for a price for the button module that goes in the stearing wheel. $156 for the buttons and by the sounds of it the surround comes with it. P/N 967002L3004X

Would be interesting to see the plug config behind it to see if it can be matched to the non factory Curise module.

Im not sure what brand the factory module is.. Will endevour to find out.

Im guessing that the dealers dont offer the after market CC with the factory buttons as that would add another $156 to the price of the kit. $700 is hard enough to swollow.!

My concern is that, if using the factory buttons is possible, I dont want the after market CC installed and haveing holes in the side of the stearing wheel then to remove the after market buttons and install the factory ones. Not nice to have holes in a new car.!

Lets take a step back for a minute!...

Logically speaking, if we are talking about a fly by wire car then cc should be built into the Engine management system and it should just be a matter of a set of buttons plugged into the loom. a real fly by wire throttle will have a motor drive on the throttle body.

From experience with BA and later series Ford's thats all it is. You buy the buttons (at an enflated price) install them and then simply enable CC within the engine management system and away you go.

So (speculating here) perhaps Hyundai modifed the Engaine management system on the CRDi for Australia and did not make the relevant tweeks for the cruise control.

When we think of it this way, and knowing that cc is available on the CRDi in NZ then I think we are being taken for a ride!..

Hi there, new to this but have to tell you that after getting our approx delivery date on 2 new crdi slx's today we have also been told that there is a new option included on the may 08 models which is cruise control, yes can you believe it, so far we have not been told it will cost more but that its just a new inclusion. I have been reading all the info on the after market ones but it seems that we won't need that now. We have been told that the cars are in Oz already but we won't get delivery until the last week in June.

Hey yes that will be good as I am still unsure whether to believe the dealer or not. Hes told us we could have cars in 2 weeks or wait longer and get the may plated ones which came standard with this option. It will be interesting to what you find out direct from hyundai.
