Hey guys, i am in need of some serious help. For some very odd reason my car (97' Accent 1.5 SOHC, AT trans, 234,000KM) stutters under hard/medium acceleration and during idle. Now heres the WEIRD part, i have noticed that the stuttering ONLY happens when i am in gear(drive/reverse). As soon as i put the car into neutral/park the stuttering goes away! It gets even more weird, the stuttering is even more noticeable when in reverse(holding the brake and staying stationary)..... I cannot figure this out, at first i thought it was something in the engine but now im not sure. If i rev the engine in neutral to the same rpm as in drive, there is no stuttering. It seems only when there is a load on the engine it will start to do this. I even had my girlfriend step on the brake while in neutral and i stodd and listened to the exhaust...it is very noticeable outside, makes like a ting/clacking sound.

PLease help anyone!

Meant to also say....the "stuttering" under acceleration sounds almost like its misfiring.

I'm having the same problem with my 2000 sonata. I got a code from my car about the coolant temp sensor so I am going to replace that and see if it helps... A few days ago I got a code about cylinder 1 misfiring so I replaced the spark plug and the car was driving better then started again, so I replaced the rest of them and reseated the one in cylinder one, I noticed that it was quite burnt from just being put in (looked worse than the ones that have been in the car for who knows how long in the other cylinders) So based on what someone else read it seems that the plug wire has gone bad and is causing cylinder 1 to not fire quite right... I'll be replacing that tooo... Hopefully it helps. I'll let you know.

Edited to add...

I also just found someone else that said they had similar problems and it was the coil pack that went bad... I'm gonna price that out tomorrow. I wonder if its a dealer only part...
