Hi,
I'm expecting delivery of my new i30 SLX this week and need advice re getting nearly 12GB of MP3 songs from my computer onto a device using the USB connection / port. I don't have an ipod.
I am pretty much computer illiterate and would like someone to tell me in simple terms: 1) - What sort of device do I need to buy? (Whats the difference between a flashdrive and a USB stik )
2) -Can I get 11.4GB of songs on one device?
3) -How to set it up to work with the i30 ( I have 73 folders with 1890 songs/files )
4) - How much should the device cost?
Thanks,

John01

Hi John01, and welcome to these humble forums. You really will enjoy a brand new driving experience with the Hyundai i30; it's been marketed aggressively here in Europe (where I am) for a very good reason, and you'll soon realise why :)

OK...

None really - they are the same. I use a USB "pendrive" which is classified both as a flash drive and a USB stick.

All depends on the capacity of the device you choose to buy. You'd need at least a 16GB stick for that storage capacity.

Again, depending on the capacity of the device you choose, you can determine how many of those folders will fit on the device. I have several USB sticks but I use a 4GB pendrive in my i30 - I just connect it to my PC and drag/drop as and when I feel the need to swap albums, although I do have almost 20 albums on it currently :). In terms of "setting it up", it's a simple case of copying folders (eg albums) to the device. The i30 will recognise folders (and subfolders) to assist you with selecting tracks when you come to play them.

4) - How much should the device cost?

Check eBay and www.play.com. A typical device of around 8GB costs around £17 in the UK (around $39 in OZ I would imagine)

Don't foget to upload pics of the new love of your life when you take delivery. And once again, welcome :)

I test drove a CRDi SX on the weekend and it had a 512mb memory stick in the glove box.. (Nice touch) with a add / blurb from Neil Crompton on it..

I suggest that you try this first before buying anything. 512MB will get quite a few track on it..

Then once your happy you know how to use them, go and buy a memory stick, or better still a USB hard disk (see other threads here re geting them working). Then you can have all your music with you...

Hours of driving / music pleasure.!

Steer clear of the really cheap "no name" brand USB sticks.

I had a budget 8GB stick that didn't work properly in my i30 (playback would simply freeze).

There's been members on these forums who have setup portable hard drives in their i30s. You just need to make sure you get a low power device that will run off a single USB port.

Also, I think the i30 head unit will only play mp3 and WMA files without DRM. It definitely does not support m4a format.

I have been successfully using a mobile USB HDD (2½" Notebook type in a case). Details of how I have been using it are on another thread.

I decided to purchase a flash drive (16gb on eBay for $89 including postage) as a substitute as I got sick of taking the HDD in and out of the i30 as I needed it for other purposes.

The new flash drive works fine and has more than enough space for our music files in the car.
