 the malfunction indicator on my 2005 4-cyl tucson with manual transmission comes on after the dealer runs diagnostics on the vehicle and clears the "emission leak" code. furthermore, the service people at the dealership tell me whatever is causing the alarm indicator to come on won't damage the car; rather the only adverse impact the alarm will have is the car won't pass NYS inspection.

Did they tell you what the code was? Usually a small leak code could be caused by the gas cap not being on tight enough. Always make sure the gas cap clicks at least 3 times when screwing it back on after filling up. If the code comes back, it's possible the cap needs to be replaced.
But that's just a guess without knowing the exact code.
