Ok Thanks for the welcome. I am in New Zealand, and I didn't even think of using an alias!. How backward is that?

I haven't got an i30 yet but it is on order, the boat arrives June?. There are at the moment a very limited number and range of i30's available in NZ.

My wife and I wanted a small efficient manual diesel with as many air bags as possible, ESP, and music options. Currently the only manual version of the i30 in NZ is the Elite 1.6CRDi and we are going for this. Its the equivalent of the higher optioned UK and Aussie models

We also tested most of the other European small diesels available, but preferred the i30. The Corolla diesels are coming in June with ESP and all the air bags, lacking until now, however I believe that the Hyundai 1.6 would be the best option for power and economy compared to their 1.4 and 2.0 litre versions.

The forum has been great for research, Thank you all :)

Armed with your information I bravely sent my wife out to deal with the salesmen. We got a 5 year warranty instead of the 3 year NZ one (Why should Aussies and Poms get 5yrs and the poor Kiwis only 3yrs?). We also insisted on two remote keys, the Ipod cable is included with the Elite, and we got a decent discount for cash and no trade in. I think the new car market has slumped a bit over here with the current "credit crunch". However in NZ we always seem to to have to pay more for distance and small market factors?

PS No cruise control, and I can't remember what colour the wife wanted!

Welcome to the site Ian, sounds like your wife did a great job sorting out your salespeople. Can I borrow her when I am buying my next new car? :innocent:

Re colour, I will bet a schooner (of beer, don't get excited sailor boys) that she picked white.

Regards

Lawrie

Hi Ian and welcome.

It sure does look like you did your research, especially with the keyfobs and ipod cable etc.

If your "Elite" is anything like my "Premium", then you've got one hell of a motor heading your way :)

Hi Ian,

Sorry for blowing your cover.. I'm a bit excitable (and maybe just a tad immature) for a 50+ person. But my hearts in the right place.

My middle of the range model (SLX) is also a diesel, my first in 25 cars but I doubt it will be my last. Like most of the other diesel owners on this forum I luv it. So I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

My first positive experience with a diesel was with a Ford Ranger flat tray at work (basically a Mazda BT50 clone I think) 3 ltr Turbo Diesel and the i30 has a similar gutsy feel to it (although obviously quieter and more refined).

Sorry again. Glad you decided to to come back. Keep us posted when she arrives.

Cheers,

Dazz

Hi Everybody!

I'm glad to finally get in to this Forum - it cost me some effort (technical problems)
Let me introduce myself: I'm Tony, I live in the Netherlands (!) and I drive an i30 (yes!).
I used to have a Hyundai Tucson for about 3 1/2 years, but since petrol-prices are going up that fast I decided to get something 'smaller' and economical.
At april 29th I got my i30 and I'm not disappointed about it at all.
I have the i-catcher model (I think that's only in the Netherlands, or in Europe).
It's rather full of options: 1.6 liter engine, 17" wheels, leather inside, ESP, EBD, ABS, parking sensors, integrated navigation, and so on... But no Cruise Control! :crying:
Have to get it mounted separately.
Here are some pictures:

Hi Tony. Welcome.

I've never heard of an "i-catcher" before, but it sure looks sweet

I like the way the SatNav is built into the otherwise useless popup holder we have here in the UK.

My friends over at www.i30ownersclub.com would also love to see your i-catcher I'm sure :) Pop over there and say hi to them for me

Hi guys!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I surely will enter the i30-owners club.
For the one who asked: the colour is called "champagne silver", but actually it's light beige metallic. I liked it from the moment I saw it (my wife too... )
Here's a picture from the car when it still was in the showroom of the dealer:

And about the weather: yes: it's summer in Holland..!

Greetings,
Tony

Well it has been a long time. There didn't seem to be much point in contributing to a forum when you didn't actually have the car to talk about! Now I feel I can update.

Our I30 finally arrived after 6+ month wait. There was a bit of a ****-up forgetting to order it, then it was on a boat, then it wasn't, then it was, then it wasn't. In the end the dealer was so embarrassed that he loaned us a new demonstrator diesel auto for about six weeks, to keep our interest up.

The colour turns out to be Champagne Silver! Plus with the long wait it turned up with cruise control which was not in the original specs. There is a real dearth of I30's in NZ. When we picked it up I looked around the yard (the largest of the Auckland dealers) and there were about 10 others, mostly diesel, and ours was the only manual one.

Cheers Ian (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)
