Hi, Please can somebody offer me any advise as the 2004 Terracan 2.9 CRTD AUTO that I bought in September 07 with 20k on the clock has no real power when towing my 1500kg caravan I was told it could tow 2.8 tonnes and all reviews I read said it could sit a motorway speeds with the largest caravan or trailer on all day long. I can just about get it up to 60mph but it is a real struggle to get there and if I try and overtake a large lorry its a nightmare sometimes I can get past very slowly but other times if I get caught in the wind coming off the lorry there's no chance. Last week going down the motorway with no incline at all it kept changing down a gear all the time and then revs up and then changes back but by this time its down to about 50 mph. The problem is so bad that on holiday last week I used 75 litres of fuel in just 220 miles and about 65 litres on the way back when I just sat behind the lorries.
Hyundai have told me that as the engine management light or gearbox lights are not coming on its not worth taking it into them as they wont find anything. The only suggestion they have is that the throttle cable might have stretched and this why I don't have full power when I need it towing and its fine when im not towing. I dont want to pay £350 to have it remapped if it is a problem with the car as I could be throwing good money after bad, I had a Terracan pass me on the motorway towing similar caravan and he flew past me like I was doing about 30 mph so Im sure the problem is with my car and not Terracans in general. Any advise or suggestions would be greatfully received. many thanks Lee

Hi Lee530, sorry to hear of your problem. Ive got a manual and it tows a plant trailer and digger with no problems at all. It sounds to me like there might be a problem with your vehicle. There is another forum in australia, and they seem to think that the auto is better for towing! Take it back to the dealer and insist they look into it, after all it is still under warranty. all the best of luck to you!

Hi Lee530

I have a Tucson 2 litre diesel and it tows like nothing I ever had before and I often forget I'm towing till I look in the mirror.

Your Terror can should be even better than my tuc at towing -crikey thats why Hyundai built them and sold them and farmers all over thew world use them to tow everything from horseboxes to houses.

There is something wrong with your vehicle especially as it used so much fuel, my Tuc does 29mpg towing -Your trip of 440 miles using 140litres of diesel and returning 14.26 to the gallon is really crazy.
Where in the UK are you? Is there another dealer located nearby you could take it to-sounds like someone should check it out properly and even do an ecm check to ensure it has the right figures.
Go to http://www.hyundaiownersclub.co.uk/index.php and put the details there as the admin guy -Tony may be able to assist as he is a Hyundai wizz.

Cheers Itza :460: :460: :460:

Hi, many thanks for everyones advise its been very much appreciated.
I have called my local dealer (Tates, Portslade, East Sussex) again who said the only thing they can think of is that the throttle cable could have stretched meaning when towing I dont get the full power and Im maybe 10-15% short when I need it. My best mate has his own garage (He does not want to touch the car at this stage in case it invalidates my warrantee) and he has said that it would be a miracle if that is the problem as my car does not have a cable and the dealer should have known this. I called Hyundai UK who told me to call their London people which I did and got a really helpful guy who went through many different things to do. He has suggested that I have the wiring to the tow bar checked as the cars appears to drive ok when Im not towing and I have cleaned out all the air filters etc. I towed the caravan 10 miles the other day to have it serviced and it towed ok much better than it had but In not sure if that because it was only a short distance, however I am going on holiday again at the end of the month to the New Forest and if it plays this time when I return I will be leaving it with a dealer until its sorted what ever they say.
thanks again for all help
regards
Lee

Hi lee530
I use Brooklyn motors in Seaford where I bought my current and previous terra's from. They have allways been on the ball with the minor problems I've had. My only gripe was the stupid delivery time of the twin socket towing kit and the dvd player that is still US.
That being said they are always friendly and conciensious, some thing sadly lacking in most other motor agents.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my 2007 Terracan 2.9CRDi Automatic. Have you been able to find out what the problem was with yours?

Been all over the south of Mozabique with my 2004 CRDi manual, towing an offroad caravan (also around 1500kg loaded with water / diesel etc for 2 weeks) - only extreme joy!

Hope you get yours sorted soon!

one slight proplem that may be linked, I find that when reversing power level seems very low. Local dealer can't find any fault

Hi MLJ

Just to answer you go onto the http://www.hyundaiownersclub.co.uk/index.php site and ask Admin as he may have the answer for you as I think iot may be a revers sensor or even your stoplight switch on the pedals as that has caused silly faults before.

cheers

We have had our Terracan Limited Edition manual now for over a year towing our Swift caravan with no problems. Hubby is really pleased with the Terracan and we regularly attend caravan rallies on fields. No way would hubby buy an automatic for towing. At the moment the manual falls in the cheaper road tax band than the auto for the U.K. Our dealer told us when we bought it, something to do with emissions, Hyundai got them down on the manual but could not on the auto.
