Hi again rossy,

If it is the dial type like mine below then the AC comes on as soon as the windscreen position is selected. It drives me nuts as i never use the AC.

I am not a technical person but as far as i know the car drives front wheel drive until it slips then it changes itself to four wheel drive.
I am sure someone will explain it better for you soon.

The A/C is designed to come on when the windshield defog position is selected. The A/C helps dry the air and remove humidity from the interior which clears the windshield quicker. You want the A/C on when clearing the windshield.

I have to say this was one of the dumbest design decisions on this vehicle. The last thing you need when trying to crank in cold weather is to have the A/C compressor loading the engine down. I sure hope they've change it by now.

The A/C compressor is disengaged when starting (and when the throttle is wide open). You are not turning the compressor when cranking in cold weather. Even notice how the radio is turned off when cranking? It's the same for the A/C.

Why would you want to? Having the A/C on gets rid of the humidity in the cabin and clears fog from the windshield quicker.

Again I'll ask, why? What about it do you hate? Have you tried using it to clear the windshield?

If you really want it off just pull the A/C fuse in the fuse box or disconnect the wire connector on the compressor clutch.

I must agree...why do you want to disable this feature? I had a car where the A/C did not turn on with the defroster setting and it took a good 2 to 3 minutes to clear the windshield. They didn't do this for their own amusement... :whistling:

I also agree... why would you. When defrosting the windshield in the cold weather, if you have the temperature dial on hot all it's doing is removing the humidty. It's not pushing cold air. By removing the humidity, your window will defrost a lot quicker.

I don't use any heater functions when the windscreen is frosty. Before i start the engine I pour warm water over the windscreen to melt the frost then get in and start the engine then drive away. No AC and no misting up on the inside. So no need to have AC coming on when the heater dial is set to windscreen/floor position. :)

That's a great way to crack the windshield.

You do know that you have windshield washer fluid that melts ice? It amazes me that people don't want to use the options/tools in the car to do a job.

Just because you haven't yet doesn't mean it's the correct way.

Bottom line: pouring warm water on a frozen windshield is a bad idea. If it worked for you great but I don't advise anyone else doing it.

Novaresource is quite correct. All cars have been this way for 30 years now.

Years ago windscreens would apparently shatter if warm water was poured over them but nowadays there are fine providing the water isn't too warm. I am not saying its the correct way but it has worked for me for about 10 years now on all my motors/vans without any problems.

Again, if it works for YOU, fine. But don't advise other to do it. It is bad advice.
