So, I just purchased an 06 Santa Fe with the 3.5L this morning. Absolutely love it, but have a few questions... Appreciate anyone who can help!

First, Engine is quiet and powerful which is great, however, when accelerating from a stop, there is a short delay before it really goes..almost feels like if I was to try and take off from second gear. Is this just how the engine is, or something I should be able to have looked at (under warranty..only 27k on it).

Secondly, Just kinda wondering if these vehicles are more likely to have issues, even an 06? I probably shouldn't have kept scouring the internet after already making my purchase and then coming across this board, but it seems like a lot of different things breaking on these cars. Perhaps just that no one is writing good stuff?

Again, thanks for the info!

When you say it is slow accelerating from a stop is it all the time or just at stop signs? What I've found with Hyundai transmissions (both my 04 Tiburon and my 06 Tucson) was that unless you come to a complete stop, the transmission would not shift into low. If I were to stop at a red light and sit for a few seconds I would pull away in 1st gear but if I "stopped" at a stop sign it would pull away in second gear. I found that my idea of a stop and the Hyundai computers idea of a stop weren't the same. So I made sure to come to a complete and full stop at signs now (or use shiftronic to make sure the transmission downshifts into first).

As far as issues, I don't think there is anything major with the 2006 Santa Fe. That was the last year for that generation and the bugs have been worked out.

Thanks for the reply:

The problem I was having was starting from a complete stop. I took it in today and they were able to tune it up a bit so it doesn't appear to be an issue now, except I got used to having to give it little extra gas and now I squeal! I'll get used to that though ;) Thanks for the info!

NovaResource what are the disadvantages to not stopping completly because you said you now completly stop or use shiftronic. Im guessing its cuz of the transmission. Im asking because I am not a fan of coming to the full 3 second stop. Also just out of curosity is there any advantages to use the shiftronic?
Thanks

I can't say there are any rear disadvantages other than slightly slower acceleration or using slightly more fuel.

The computer in the trans is just a tiny bit slow in down shifting and if you start to accelerate too soon the trans will not go into first.

There are actually 3 ways to get it to downshift. The first two are the ways I said above: complete and total stop or manually downshift with shiftronic. The third way is to stab the throttle about 2/3 of the way down until the computer tells it to kickdown a gear and then let off the throttle slightly so not to accelerate too quickly. I got good at downshifting with the throttle so I didn't always have to drive in shiftronic mode.

I have a 2005 2.7 FWD with 100K KM and except for a ball joint (roads in my area have nasty pot wholes in spring) I just fallowed the maintenace schedule. My brakes are still good and everything else and I'm not one to take it easy on my trucks. No complaints

As a pedestrian, I almost got run over by someone who also wasn't a "fan" of a full stop! (Someone making a right turn from an alley onto a busy street. She was very good about looking left for oncoming traffic, but decided looking right & actually STOPPING wouldn't be necessary in our one-stoplight town.) Thankfully I pay attention and was able to leap out of the way. She looked pretty horrified when I caught her face.

And be careful, b/c I'm sure you're not a "fan" of being ticketed either.

I know, sorry, off-topic, but it seemed like a pretty goofy thing to say. (At least to someone who's been driving for 24 years now.)

There is a TSB out for the electronic throttle control on the 3.5 liter to cure the 'jackrabbit' starts that so many owners have complained about. Have them check for TSB 07-36-001 for you.

Good luck.

Edit: I see you have a 2.7 liter, the same as I. Unfortunately, my friend our 2.7 liter engines have a traditional mechanical throttle. There is no way to adjust it as far as I know. I've had people say it starts a little jumpy off the line but I'm so used to it now I don't even notice it. :57:
