Hi, I just purchased a 2008 Hyundai Elantra GLS last month and have a question regarding the engine/transmission. I previously had a Ford Taurus SE with a little over 200 hp so driving the Elantra takes some getting used to. My question is, when I am coming to a stoplight or rolling slowly in traffic, it feels like the car is going to stall when I finally stop. It never does and the RPM's are steady but it feels like the engine is starving for fuel for about 3 seconds (especially with the a/c on) and then it is fine and purrs like a kitten. Acceleration is great and I have no other driveability issues. I am assuming this is normal and given such a small engine you can feel everything that is happening but has anyone had this experience or am I over analzying this? Thanks

My Elantra idles at about 600 RPM in neutral (about 800 RPM in gear), but I've never felt it shudder or feel like it was going to stall on me, even with the A/C going full-tilt. Does it do it consistently (like, every time you come to a stop)?

Chris,

My RPM's are the same..it does it consistently but I think I am just not used to how the car performs. It is not necessarily a shudder feeling..hard to explain.

Might be the down-shifting?.... Honda's have this "feature" which makes the car shudder when slowing down, coming to a stoplight.

Hi there, this is my first post here... I dont speak english 100% so I'll try my best

Well, my Elantra has a 1.6L engine and it alse idles at very low RPM Max 650 and it doesnt matter with A/C on or off... and... YES some times it feels like stalling, it feels acutally like at idle a little mistake with fuel and clutch movement and the engine will stall right away, and it is noticeable in the A/C fan speed that drops a little. USA market mostly get the 2.0 engine so it is rare that the 2.0 do this also, maybe a design problem or it is made this way to reduce engine consumption.

I just heard on my local news that Hyundai is involved in some sort of recall with the '07 & '08 Elantra motors. It mentioned something about the engine shutting down. I only heard it one time. No other details yet.
Check Hyundai's main website. There is a little bit of info there.

Well no recall has been issued as of yet. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is investigating the complaints received from 4 owners of fuel pump failure. The investigation covers a total of 167,000 Elantras between years 2007-2008.

yep. . . there was quite a discussion about this recall going on at elantraclub .com

It could be just getting used to a smaller engine, but I would definitely have the car looked at.
