The A/C comes on automatically when you turn the heater control to either defrost /floor or defrost. The handbook says you can turn the a/c off if you press the a/c button. Unfortunately this does not work and the a/c remains on under these conditions and this wastes gas! If the a/c comes on automatically then I would assume the a/c button should light up and mine does not. Can anyone verify if their a/c button lights up in the defrost modes and whether the a/c does turn off when you push the a/c button. You can check this by observing the a/c compressor, it has a electro- mechanical clutch and when the a/c is off the clutch does not turn, only the pulley.
Thanks, :57:

the A/C is triggered by a little micro switch, which is operated by the "Mode selector" gear. There are 2 cam-notches, a single notch at def/floor, and a double notch at def. We cut the single notch from the little gear (made of plastic), so that the A/C only comes on in DEF. Also, you can ask the tech to disconnect the 2-pin connector for the micro switch, and the A/C will not come at all, unless you press the A/C button.

Yes, Air COndition works in my 2005 Accent as decribed by You and owner-manual. When directing air flor to window-defrost or window/legs, AC LED switches On. When I press the AC button, it goes off.

As You need to run AC once a week for 5 minutes from maintenance reasons, I found this is a good idea.

Best wishes, Attila

yes... that's exactly what happens in my 2000 accent gls too - and this is as per the owner's manual. reason is that you typically use these modes only with the windows up, and at that time there's every chance of condensation happening on your windscreen - to clear this up, the a/c starts.

enjoy!
