When you are waiting in your car and your buddies take forever to come out of their house do you turn off the car or just let it idle?

idle, baby..

I think i idle too much, but i'd rather keep the car running than turn it off and on again.
dont know if either is beneficial to detrimental to the car's mechanics, but it's what i do.. including it warm up for 5 or so mins on every cold start.

I drive my car for a living and when I get out, I leave it running while
I run into the offices. Unless it looks like I will be in there longer them 5 minutes.

omg onetwenty. people like you are the reason for fule shortages and co2 emissions lol. 5 min every cold start??? wtf??? i let my car warm up only for two min when it gets below -25 c other than that i start it, scrape my windows and go. there is a reason for the block heater you know. and to put an end to it, it takes less gas to turn your car off and on then it does to let it idle for 30 seconds. and as far as mechanics go, if something breaks its under warranty which it shouldnt because car are designed for the harshest of conditions. like stopping and starting over and over for a 6 hour period. the car people test that to make sure the starters can handle it.

as for me, if im at a long light and i know its a long one i turn off my car. if im stuck in traffic i turn it off at the light and cost. i rarely let my car idle for more then 5 min and if i do im listening to tunes or playing with my stereo thats it!

If it's going to be a few minutes, I'll usually shut off the engine. Hopefully that helps keep a tiny amount of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. I try to help. :innocent: lol!

I idle and on cold winter mornings, I let it idle for 10 minutes. Nothing like getting into a warm car

In the cold of winter, let it idle 2 minutes. Or if I'm late for work, idle until it drops from it 1500, to 1000-1100 range. 2 minutes and you're engines well lubricated, so start driving and in 2 km you'll be feeling the heat.

Otherwise, 30 seconds max.
I'm not crazy about turning the car off at lights, unless I'm positive it's a long light.

I call him on his cell and tell him he has 1 minute or I start to charge him gas money. Or that he's now buying lunch.

im no enviro head but I do shut my down when waiting, even at a busy drive though.. In winter I idle for about a minute at most and go.
Car warms up quicker if you just get in a drive it.
Idling in the cold is not good for the converter due to the rich mixture.

I've really noticed that with this car... when it's brutally cold, if I start it up and let it run for a few minutes the air temp from the vents is lukewarm at best so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to leave it running. The second I put it in gear and step on the gas, the air gets nice and toasty. It does that once it's warmed up and I'm sitting at a light too, I lose a bit of heat until I take off again. Other cars I've had (with much bigger engines) would heat up pretty good if I left them idling, not so with this little guy.

As long as I keep moving, the heater works great.
