hi there. i had a question, im wondering if someone could help me out. i have a 1998 hyundai accent, and im getting a tick tick tick tick sound coming from the engine, but its usually when its cold out(im in canada) and after ive been driving for a while.. sometimes after 1 hour or so. its a very fast tick over and over.. i cant really hear it while im driving, but when i am in park, or driving really slow i can hear it. its not constant either. sometimes it will tick for 5 minutes straight.. sometimes only a few seconds. i have taken it in to the shop 3 times, and everytime its get shy and they cannot hear it. i keep up to date on all the maintance, so its in good condition. i just put in Lucan oil stabilizer after i changed my oil a few days ago, and it is still doing it. although not as much, but it is a bit warmer out. anywho, i thought id post since everytime i take it in, no sound is heard. any info would be great. thanks

Hi!........the use of flushing oil before an oil change often helps ticking HLA`s.......as does the use of 5W/40 pure synthetic oil.

Remember to ALWAYS keep the oil topped-up to MAX on the dipstick.

Nick. :)

Are you sure it's from the engine bay ? Sometime I hear a tick and bang from the rear of the car nearest the fuel tank or muffler. I've been told such a noise is normal and I researched fuel tank and have discovered that poly-alloy fuel tanks have a tendancy to expand and contract. So junp under the car after it's switched off and have a listen towards the rear as it could be from there, it would be interesting to know. Any by the way my tick is temperamental and the dealer had trouble trying to fault it.

the reply given by VALKYRIE YB70 is good advice, the actual cause of your ticking niose is almost certain to be a hydrolic tappet, this is nothing much to worry about but it does drive you crazy. If what VALKYRIE YB70 has sugested does not cure the problem the only thing to do is change the lifter if you can determing which one it is that is playing about otherwise change all of them

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=1][COLOR=blue]I get the same tick tick sound from the right fan outlet (this is a right hand drive Accent, 2001 GLS) . I hear it only when I am in parking or driving slowly, the difference is that I hear it regularly. The technician recommends to change the tappets. Is it true?

if you only get the noise in very cold weather njtom you may be better off with a higher density oil

No!.....a lighter 5W/40 pure synthetic oil will refill the HLA`s quicker on a cold morning, after they`ve drained down overnight!.

My 1998 Accent 1.5 also has a slight tic tic sound. Since I baught the car with 11000kms on the clock did have that sound. It now has 87000 on the clock and the sound hasn't gotten worse, nor has it gone away.

Seems to me to be a Hyundai Accent sound

My wife has a 99 accent and she got the same tick sound,I have a 2004 and it's just starting to make the tick noise. Some American made cars do this too.I had a 91 pontiac that did the same thing. Not for sure what the noise is but it almost sounds like oil dripping in the oil pan.I haven't tried replacing the oil like Val said but that sounds like something to try,I live in Texas USA by the coast and it doesn't get that cold,we don't even get any snow.

the Accent has quite small lifters, and they can get easily sludged up, causing them to get noisy. It is good advise to add a can of WYNN's engine flush to the engine oil before the oil change, every +-50K km. This will clean the bad resedue in the engine, lifters & carbon deposits at the rings. The Wynn's (or also known as X-TEND) product is the best addetive on the market, that I have ever used.
