QUOTE(aranciata-oz @ Apr 24 2008, 10:59 PM) Hey guys! What's going on with this cruise thing ... it appears our bro's across the Tasman has "steering wheel mounted cruise controls" on their 1.6CRDi !!!!! Is this a typo? I'm going to email them to ask , Kiwi eeccents and all .... (so they think I'm a Noo Zillander eenterested in teest driving their machine ....) :) http://www.hyundai.co.nz/shared_content/br...rochure_i30.pdfGoto page 17 of the PDF .... Looks like they miss out on the SR but get more colour choice.. Only 3 yr and 100,000km warranty in NZ.. The way I read it, the CRDI Auto and Manual both get Cruise control. Sounds like they have the technology!... Just not in OZ.. I ahve just sent this link to Hyundai (that I had previously logged a info request with). Lets see what they come up with.

Guys (and any gals), a new article from Carsguide below, about their long term i30 doing over 1000kms on one tank, after running in at 10,000kms. They also talked about the lack of cruise control, but with such a glowing article overall, I don't think Hyundai Aust are going to give a hoot about adding CC onto the Aust spec ..... still, you i30 owners, continue to enjoy the plaudits! I just get this sense this car is becoming a modern day Subey - well made, and made to run for a very very very very long time ..... http://carsguide.news.com.au/site/motoring..._a_single_tank/

The only way to know for sure is to drive it.

I'd be lying if I said my want of the cruise control has completely disappeared ....
I'll be with the car for 3 years, with at least 3 or 4 long trips every year and I can't imagine not having cruise on a car I'm paying close to $30k for. Yes it's all in perspective, but I must admit it's quite an important item for me within this perspective.
I'll just hang and wait for feedback from you guys regarding how the dealer fitted ones work, and also how they look - I sort of got the shudders when one of the dealers described an "external" button on the steering .... again, I much prefer a well integrated unit, especially electronically.
The other problem is the Maz3 diesel .... :) ..... which aside from the space saver and lack of a trip computer, at least has cruise and ESP as standard, and there's quite a few demo stock (<100kms) going for $28K D/A. You'd hopefully understand my predicament ....
Anyway, at least it's down to two cars now ... I'm sure by July some of you would be able to report on the third-party cruise (would love to see some photos), but especially how it fits into the electronic display operation.
Hyundai Aust's attitude does pee me off but !!!!

AO this is strange, as a good friend of mine bought a Mazda 3 turbo Diesel just after Christmas and was a 07 build he got at a good price, he told me to take it for a drive, i asked if it had trip PC he said yes, then i asked if it had Cruise Control he said no he seemed to think not many Diesels came with cruise control, but i also test drove a Ford Focus it had Cruise Control and Trip PC. both these cars had more power than the i30 but i did not enjoy driving eather of them aas much as the i30, the i30 gear box and the gear ratio's were nicer to drive with for me. the focus seemed to use a very tall ratio 1st gear and so did the mazda, something i don't like especially in traffic i like a low ratio 1st gear the i30 felt stronger in first than the other two because on ther lower gear ratio they use in 1st. but i must admit i did not check if Mazda 3 turbo diesel came with cruise control it was just my friend that owned one that told me, he traded it in only owned it 3 months drove 10,000k then traded it in on a new BF Falcon on LPG says cheaper to run he lives on central coast and has a place up Coffs Harbour so drives a lot. Mmm ... very interesting indeed! I haven't driven both the i30 and Maz3D side by side long enough to be able to work out the differences. All I know is I was most impressed by the i30 all round (even the SX auto diesel), with the Maz3D I do recall a fair bit of lag when taking off, with a very distinct lunge in torque as it hit the magic 2000rpm mark. The Maz3D engine was very gruff, but that might have been because it was very much still new and within 5 minutes of running - apparently diesels get quieter as it warms up (is this true for your i30?). The Focus was pretty much the same, except it was incredibly explosive when the turbo got going! Overall, I recall the i30 as being a quiet refined all rounder - I prefer the gear of the Mazda, but then again I should drive the i30 again soon just to familiarise (if the dealers have a demo that is ...).

aranciata-oz,
Yes, the i30 quietens down when it warms up. Once warm, from inside the cabin, you really don't know it is a diesel.
Regarding the explosive turbo power when you hit the magic revs, it is my experience that the i30 is very smooth in its acceleration. Yes, you really can tell when it gets to 1900rpm, but then it maintains that boost all the way through the maximum torque range (1900-2750) and a little beyond. Keeping it in the torque range gives you plenty of powerful but consistently smooth acceleration.
If you happen to use this torque aggresively, expect a slight drop in fuel economy. Accelerate smoothly through this rev range and use the torque wisely and you get the rewards. I can see how Hans Tholstrop, being a master of economical driving, managed to drive from Adelaide -> Sydney -> Newcastle on a tank of diesel.
