Problem with Oxygen sensors. fAULT CODE on ECL indicates PO421 Catalyst efficiency fail. 5 Oxygen sensors fitted to my model.

Anyway of isolating the fault code to an individual sensor?

Hi Rich T

To the best of my knowledge , there are 2 oxygen sensors max.

one ahead of the Cat. and the other after it . I and a few other forumers

have successfully removed the cat . I did it 14 months ago ,performance

is the same . no emission test are carried out here in jordan .

Thanks for the reply guys.

Catalyst problem sounds expensive!! Are there any checks that can be done to the sensors or to the cat to confirm cat is faulty before changing?

Mazan,

Technician gave me parts list diag of exhaust system which identified 5 sensors. I do not know their purpose and as you say probably only 2 are linked with the cat.

When you removed the cat, did it not effect the fuel consumption as I would have thought that the sensors have some input to the fuel management system?
Did you have to isolate the sensors from the ECU to stop the ECL being illuminated?

Thanks again

Rich T

Hi Rich T

There are no 5 oxygen sensores on the jet . go underneath and look , or better

down laod the service manual it is pined on this site , and see for yourself .

as far as the fuel consumption when the cat is removed , it is the same or

maybe little bit better . watch for emission test in yor country if you decide to

remove it , some even just empty the cat from the inside ,so it appears

there while actually it is empty . this device is quite expensive .

[COLOR=blue][COLOR=blue]We had the same error code. I bought a universal Oxygen sensor and replaced with my rear sensor. Problem is gone.

There are only 2 O2 sensor in the Jet. Sould be the same for most model, mine is 2004.

1st one is located before the 1st CAT, this is used by the ECU to monitor the oxygen level in the exhaust during closed loop mode.

the 2nd O2 is located after the 2nd CAT to detect if the CAT is heated up and working properly.

Just replace the 2nd O2 sensor and it should be fine.
