I have an i30 Diesel Automatic and I think its great !!

The problem I have is that I want to plug a small laptop drive up through the USB port

Unfortunately the stereo does not recognize the drive when it plugged in

I have formated it as FAT32 (Like the instructions tell you do do) and I have tried it with a 150, 30 and 1 GB partitions but it still wont work

Does anyone know how to get this to work ?

Could it be that the current requirements of the laptop HHD are simple not available out of the USB port in the i30?
I wouild expect that a simple USB drive would have a very low current requirement where as a laptop HDD my require a certain abmount in order to spin the motor in the drive.
While desktop and laptop PCs have the capability to provide the correct power requirements through the USB port about 500mA IIRC, It could be quote possible that the i30 head unit doesnt allow this much current drain.

As soon as i get my I30 i will perform a test on the current limits of the head unit as i had the same idea about the HDD, but really with 16gb usb sticks to we need this much music LOL

Cheers

That's a hard drive yes?

Can you hear the drive spinning up when plugged in?

Just checked my manual and it says that some devices may take some time to get recognised. If it's spinning up ok, maybe it needs a few minutes...?

Let us know

I have 120GB of music and I was really keen to take it all with me as I drive heaps (Hence why I bough the diesel)

I must say its a huge disappointment I have been looking forward to it for months :(

Hi There Kasia3

Don't despair, you can buy an 8gb flash drive which should work in the i30 from only $55.

See link...(havent dealt with this crowd and would need to be able to return it if not compatible)

http://www.rbp.net.au/?gclid=CJOhqbD6xJICFQcwiQod4HIinA

By my reakoning thats about 2000 x 4mb songs.

Might be best to buy one locally for a little more so you can swap it with another if have a problem.

Regards,

Dazz

Hi all,

I'm working on this and having some success. I have partitioned an 80gb drive into three drives, each formated as FAT32. The partitions are: 29.2Gb, 29.2Gb and 15.9Gb

I have heard that some older PC USB ports do not deliver enough current to get drives spinning. I have also read that older 2.5" drives needed more power to get them spinning. Hence a lot of drive cases have double USB connectors to plug into a PC. In my experience, newer 2.5" drives can operate successfully with a single USB connection.

I placed different albums in the last and smaller partion, the head unit recoginsed them and they played successfully.

Next I tried placing an album in each partition and away it went, no problem. Each album was recogised and played successfully.

Next, I placed all the albums in the first partition and again had success.

It appears that FAT32 partitions can not be greater than 32Gb under Windows XP, so my next experiement will be to use themaximum partition size of 32Gb for one drive and format the remainder as NTFS and see if it will work.

I'll keep you posted.

Bob

Update to my previous post:

As I said, I have partitioned the drive with a 32Gb (32768Mb) for music and then partitioned the remainder as NTFS (which I intend to use as my general work files). I am assuming the i30 head unit will not recognise the NTFS partion but should see the 32Gb intended for music.

Just tried it out and :) SUCCESS :) , it plays like a dream.

Drive is a Samsung MP0804H 2.5" drive in a Noontec PH02B case which I sourced on eBay about 18 months ago.

I just bought an 8GB USB flash drive to try in my i30 and unfortunately it doesn't seem to work.

It'll play alright for a little while but eventually, it'll just freeze up, especially if I skip tracks or use random play.

My 2GB drive plays fine though.

Has anyone else tried 8GB or larger USB flash drives in their i30 (mine is an SX)? I'm wondering if it's a problem with the stereo or just a crappy flash drive (works fine in the computer though).

I keep a DaneElec 4gb reserved for use in my i30. That works a treat.

I did once try an 8gb cheapy from China which has folders containing all kinds of apps, video clips and text files. It did eventually find the mp3 folders but took quite a while.

Never mind, it was just a crappy flash drive. Swapped it for a "brand" one which works fine.

I got an official reply from Hyundai that there are no foreseeable limits (within reason) to the size of a flash drive that can be used by an i30 stereo. I guess the only real limit is the FAT32 filesystem.

Nothing wrong with FAT32, just format the drive before putting anything on it, on a computer. ;)

From what I can tell its a power problem, I use my 160GB drive on an older PC and it did not work

Anyone got any ideas on how to boost the power from the USB port?

Hi Kasia3 and others,

Most of the new 2½" notebook HDDs are low power consumption drives. The one I am using in my i30 is one of these. I have been using it for 4 dyas on the way to and from work and it is working fine.

I conclude therefore that it is not necessary to boost the output of the i30 USB port if the drive is a low consumption drive. If you search the manufacturers site for your model specs, you should be able to determine if it is one of the low consumption drives. Most of the large capacity disks should be.

If you don't know what model of the disk drive you have in the external box, this can be found by looking in the Device Manager of Windows when the drive is plugged in and looking under Disk drives.

For details of how I formatted it read the earlier posts on this thread. It has not missed a beat. Currently I have 33 albums with a total of 489 tracks (mp3). The head unit remembers what album and track I have been playing and the point in the track and continues playing where it left off. I remove the drive and take it intowork with me as it has work files in the NTFS partition.

Cable used to connect it could also make a difference.

I have an external drive which won't spin up with a normal cable, but with one of those heavy duty (double ended) usb cables it works fine...even with just one of the points plugged in. Definitely worth a try. Can usually get one with a cheap external case (around $10 or so).

Aussie Bob,

Are you saying you can remove your drive and the head unit STILL remembers the extraction point, for later re-insertion?

I wish my pendrive did that.

Shambles,

I haven't tried all combinations with the intent of testing them out, but what I have done so far seems to suggest it works that way.

Usually I take disconnect the HDD after I have swithed off the head unit (I'm causious about removing any drive while it might be having info read from or written to). I'm not so worried about plugging it back in.

Has always returned to the track to date.

I found an old laptop that had a 20GB hard drive in it, so I used it and that works great

I didn't change the cable or the caddy just the drive and now it works.

Shame my 160GB drive will never work but 20GB is still good enough to carry my favorites and some new albums

I think your right about trying to get a low powered drive

Overall it looks like Hard drives work provided...
1) Its formatted no larger then 32GB using FAT32
2) Its a drive that can run off lower power

Use this link below, it compares drives based on max power consumption, there is a huge different between power usage but if you buy the one that uses the least power then you will have a better chance of it working

http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.ht...2=414&chart=157

Good luck
