It's even more confusing. Hyundai vehicles made and sold in Korea do not have many of the US EPA/DOT mandated features, so they may not be exported to and registered in the States. US Customs will hold all foreign made vehicles until the owner/importer can verify compliance.
Many outfits both in and out of the States advertise "conversions" that will meet US requirements, but unless you know for sure that they're reputable do not deal with them.
I live in S. Korea and would love to be able to export a Santa Fe diesel, but, alas, I cannot. The true cost of reconfiguring the vehicle over here would add about 30-grand to the purchase price, with no guarantees. :o
