I am still driving on the fuel supplied by the dealer and, before I fill up, want to know if there are any brands of diesel that I should favour or avoid?

I read on a Landrovers owners site that BP is by far the best even though it is more expensive.

As this is my first ever diesel car I just want to be sure I am using the right stuff, or am I being pedantic?

Cheers

Hi Hadders,
I would like to know that myself, i think the reason people say BP is the best is they filter there fuel. i think you sould try to find a good aditive to condition your fuel as you can get bacteria grow in your fuel tank. i have also been told, that good diesel conditioner can help economy, but i doubt it would help much on a brand new car, but i think i'll be useing it to stop bacteria growing in the tank.
Cheers

Thanks Lakes,
I will probably contact the dealer and ask their service department what they think.
I will post any response I get.

That will be good to know Hadder's
only told you about the bacteria as a guy i know had his Benz Sprinter Diesel van have problems starting due to the bacteria build up in tank, then a guy with a mitsubishi diesel have the same problem had to have tank removed to send away to clean out. thats were the BP filter can help, but conditioner is a smart move too.
cheers

Spoke to dealer today and all they said was that they didn't think it made much difference but they would recommend using one of the bigger names (BP, Shell, Caltex), no other info than that unfortunately.

Hadders i'll go over the road from work if i get time and ask Fleet Serve they service diesel's only they should know, at any one time they can have up to about 30 to 50 big rig's in there being serviced. i don't think the average Hyundai dealer would have that great of knowledge on diesel.

Hi There,

I'm starting to wonder if this business of BP being a better diesel could have something going for it. I bought my first tank of Diesel at BP but have since gone elsewhere as they are the dearest in the town.

Last Fill I got Caltex and have since been getting an obvious smell of diesel fumes when accelerating hard and when pull up after a run? Didn't notice it previously. Could be just co-incidence.

Any comments from other Diesel owners? Could other CRDi owners monitor this and post their finding please. I will get BP next time and see what happens...

Rgds,

Dazz

Dazz, i don't know m8 but i do no i don't mind paying more for good fuel. BP stand by there product as long as you have proof thats what you were useing, but if you use anything you don't have proof if you have a problem, also if you have an engine problem caused by bad fuel Hyundai might not cover that, thats one reason i said i'll use BP and keep recepts and a log book. but as far as i know if its not Woolworths Caltex caltex comes from same refinery, up here at least.
the diesel trucks i sometimes drive only use Shell fuel as have a shell card and i never notice the smell of diesel, take it to your dealer to check as should not be able to smell fuel might have something leaking or loose. so check and be safe.

Hi Dazz,

I have filled up from Caltex and Mobil, and haven't had any problem with fumes. When you noticed the smell, were you in the car or outside? The handbook suggests you should normally have the fresh air flow open rather than closed, especially when idling for any length of time. It seems to suggest that fumes might be able find their way into the car when stopped with the engine going.

Regards

Lawrie

PS last time I filled up, diesel was 152.9 cents. Today it is 168.9. Fortunately a full tank of diesel lasts longer than petrol!

Hi LRK,

If I drive agressively we can smell it inside while we are driving (not overpowering but noticeable) My wife doesn't like "drafts" so she often closes the vents on her side of the car...Interesting, I'll experiment with that.

When we pull up lately we also get a wiff when we get out (park in our driveway not in a garage or carport) It has been fairly still lately, little or no wind.

Will keep you posted..

Regards,

Dazz

P.S. The difference between diesel and petrol prices in our town (Devonport, Tas) varies between about 15cents and 30 cents and varies more between garages in the town than it ever has before... Have seen $1.51.9 and $1.70.9 for diesel on the same day at two different stations!
