I'll try to make this short and sweet. I posted yesterday regarding the 06 Azera and how I was shocked at the gas mileage appx. 14-16 combined.
We had told the salesman we were looking for something used for everyday errands to run around in when the kids weren't always with us because the gas in our Yukon was killing us but that we were keeping the Yukon for family trips and to tow the boat. (no trade in) He said they just got this car traded in (06Azera) and it would get 29mpg which I knew was BS but I did think I'd get at least 20mpg based on the research I did. So, after further research I'm now convinced I'll never see 20mpg because I live 3 min. from the interstate which I'm on everyday for at least 40 min. and elsewhere rarely drive less than "55". I'm clearly not saying that this is the salesman/dealerships fault, I accept full responsibility. However, this is the third car we've bought from this dealer (which is a Hyundai, Mitzubishi) dealership, there was no trade in, we did buy a warranty and it's not yet been 24 hours. Another fact that might be in my favor is that as far as paper work we have what is called a "Binding Arbitration Agreement" and an "On The Spot Delivery Agreement" translated meaning I am supposed to go to the bank today and have them increase the amount of the loan then take the paper work to the dealership.
Does anyone think I could plead my case and ask them to find another vehicle more in keeping with the mileage we were looking for or am I an idiot for even asking?
Is there a vehicle out there that gets decent gas mileage but still seats 5 comfortably on occasion that will last for at least 6-7 years? It has occured to me that maybe I'm being unrealistic.
Thank you so much for your advice.

Well... fuel efficient, a Yukon is not.

In the Hyundai line-up, the 4-cylinder Sonata would definitely produce far, far better economy and would be pretty comfortable for 5 inside. You could go talk to the guys on the Sonata forum but I read that a lot of folks over there are getting great reliability and high mileage out of 10+ year old Sonatas. That might be a better option.

I'm not sure if poor fuel economy is going to fly with the dealership as a reason to nix the deal. But given that you stated your goal in buying a car, and the salesman gave you a number that's clearly contradictory to fact or reason (29mpg???), that's a pretty strong case, I think. Hopefully they'll work with you on it.

Congratulations on looking for something cooler than a big SUV to drive around town. :)

The Sonata is great. Another option would be the Elantra (the new 2007-up version). It is very roomy inside,; much more than you would expect and it gets better economy than the 4-cyl Sonata. Another option would be a 4-cyl Tucson. Again, very roomy but still a gas sipper. I have a V6 Tucson and still get over 22 mpg with it.

Good news is when I went the dealership web site I saw their pre-owned vehicles are backed by a 2 day money back guarantee AND a two week exchange policy.
Bad news is I can't find a Sonata 2.4 Limited. I will recheck the Tuscon, I didn't know it came in 4 cyl. and check out the Elantra. Then, bite the bullet and call my salesman. You guys don't know how much these forums help, Thank you!

Be sure to check out the Elantra. I had a rented one for a couple weeks. I was very impressed. Very impressed with the whole car and I'm picky!

I have an Azera SE.

My engine is a 3.3. I consistently get 24.5 mpg with an equal amount of highway and city driving. Vehicle has approximately 16,000 miles.

I have a 2007 Azera Limited. At present it has 545 miles. I track my gas mileage on every tank. After 3 fillups my average mileage is 20.49 mpg. about 60% in town driving. I suspect to get 26 to 28 mpg in highway driving.
If your driving habits are easy, then something may be wrong with the computer programing of the fuel system.
My Suburban was that way from the factory. Consistantly got 13 mpg. Reprogrammed the computer and now gets 17 average.

:innocent:

Might I suggest that you not trade for any other vehicle, but keep this one!

I gather that you've not had it anywheres nearly long
enough to really know what mileages it will get.

If you are truly only getting only 14-16 mpg, I suspect that something is truly wrong.
I also suspect that the problem may be in your driving habits!

Are you the only driver? Is this mileage only via the onboard computer?

Try resetting the computer before you do your daily routine of three minutes to the freeway,
etc. and then back home and read the computer again. You may be surprised.

Do you make jack-rabbit starts? Try taking off with a lite foot and allow the trans to upshift early.
These motors have plenty of low speed torque, especially the 3.8L which is in your car.

We always get tank mileage of 24 mpg or better in mixed driving figured
the old fashion way (Miles divided by gallons consumed.)

This car does sound ideal for your needs.
Do you want to downgrade to some econobox to save only a few miles per gallon?

The choice is of course yours.

Good luck!

:)

:)

Getting the computer reprogrammed is easy for the more popular vehicles such as your Suburban
and my old Ford Focus Kona. Do you know of anyone that will do our Azeras?

I have a box that I can plug into the dia. port and put any program I want into my computer.
Wish someone had that same set up for our Azeras, but alas . . :whistling:

I have a friend who has managed 2 used car lots for new car dealers overs the last 30 years. I have heard him tell a customer a couple of days after a sale, " I certainly will not MAKE you keep a vehicle you don't like. Bring it back, and we'll find something you do like."
If you tell him that you are truly unhappy, and want to get into a different vehicle from the same dealer, they should certainly accomodate you.

The Yukon is a hybrid.... it burns hundred dollar bills :460:

My Azera 3.8 with 700 miles is averaging 21.5MPG city/highway mix. Open road 65MPH 27MPG. Which is what I expected from a 3700LBS car with a 3.8 engine.

Like boostedfc3s said, the 3.3 was not available in 06. I am so happy I was able to get an Azera with the 3.3.

My Santa Fe also has the 3.3 engine.

I feel that my Azera has more than enough power plus I get better gas mileage and still have the comfort of a nice sedan.

The 3.3 Lambda is a great engine and serves both my Santa Fe and Azera very well.

The best of both worlds IMHO.

Yes, but.......About three or four times a year, a punk, all amps pounding, pulls beside me at the stoplight, revs up, and is astonished when the old guy in the beige four door with the S380 on the back blows him away!!! Yep, it's a total waste of our precious $4 gas......but what a hoot!

For me it's fewer punk kids, than snooty, self-absorbed suburbanites who want to race ahead from a stoplight and cut in front of you - if they need to turn left, they get in the right lane and race. If they need to turn right, they get in the left lane and race. I use the smooth, substantial power of the Azera (and, OK, the XJR does fairly well in this category as well) to foil their efforts to tread on me in traffic. You want to turn right? GET IN LINE WITH THE REST OF US BUDDY.

I find that particular guilty pleasure, and subsequent satisfaction, well worth the slightly higher fuel consumption. I am a jerk, I know, but I use the power of the car for purposes of good and against the forces of evil (rudeness, unnecessary danger, bad attitude). At least, that's the quasi-rational story I keep telling myself.

A few weeks ago I taught just such a lesson to a driver of a Nissan FX45, who probably found this lesson particularly unsettling, about the quality of Hyundai engineering in the last few years... 1: That's not a race car you're in (gee! Imagine that, an SUV isn't a race car! Who'd have thunk it?) and 2: Pick your battles wisely. This is a Hyundai you're dealing with. Better watch out.

Have an 07, 3.8 with 9,000 miles. Has gotten up to 32 MPG on interstate at 65 MPH with cruise on.
Yesterday, got 28 one way and 29 the other on a trip with 15% in town and 85% on highway. On highway, drove 55-60 MPH using cruise.
It is not an economy car and should not have been sold to you as one, but considering the weight and all the options on it, it is not too bad. :)

Like Carolina-Bob, we have an '07 Azera Limited with 3.8L V6. We are also senior citizens and appreciate the smooth and comfortable ride of our Azera. We now have 4300 miles on the car and after the last 150 mile trip our average fuel economy is sitting on 28.0 mpg. We drove that trip at 60 mph. and saw a high of 29.3 mpg. Prior to the trip we were seeing 26.5-26.7 mpg. average. I reset the fuel economy reading before the trip. The current reading includes our local driving for a couple of weeks now.

We live in the country and drive about 25 miles to/from most of our shopping and also some 4-6 mile trips to/from school with our grandchildren. We usually drive about 50 mph. on the farm to market roads and about 55-60 mph. on better highways. We do not have too many traffic lights to deal with and only gentle rolling hill terrain with some flat areas.

You might want to have your dealer check your catalytic converter to make sure it is not stopped up. Someone else mentioned very poor gas mileage and that is what the problem turned out to be.
