The last 3 times the dealer changed the engine oil, the dipstick always showed just a little less than half an inch OVER the full line. While some leeway is built in, it can damage the engine and the Hyundai Owners manual specifically states in bold letters DO NOT OVERFILL! The 1st time I drained the excess myself, 2nd time I returned to the dealer and they said it was the auto oil gun, and now this time they say Hyundai put the wrong dipstick in the engine and "normal" will now indicate well above the H mark. The service manager also said several customers have complained and that he himself called Hyundai for guidance and a fix and was told to keep putting in the 4.23Qt and let it read high. So far there is no updated dipstick. I called the 800# and they said it may take a few weeks to research but they would get back to me. Anyone else have this issue?

Update: Suprised at no responses to this. Hyundai has admitted that they put the wrong dipstick in 05-08? with the 2.0L and the manual recommended refill will idicate an overfill. Dealers have been advised to continue to add the manual amount and advise customer. When I last talked to Hyundai they had no plans to issue new dipsticks for affected vehicles. Poor quality control and corporate service from Hyundai as either the correct amount shows an overfill(bad), for those of us who check the oil level, or if the dealer only adds to the full mark, you're already a 1/2 qt below full after an oil change. Hyundai knows the problem and instead of issueing new dipsticks, puts it on the dealer to advise the customer.

Interesting. We just always put 4 quarts (even) in all the 2.0L engines, except for the new Elantras. Haven't had any problems with them being overfilled that way, but then again if the dipsticks are wrong, then we wouldn't know we had a problem.

And 0.23 quarts is only like a fourth of a quart...

I had a oil change out of state and that was what they did also. Myservice mgr had a lengthy discussion with the tech line and my complaint to Hyundai took weeks because it went through engineering and the answer to both of us is that full will show overfill and a full will be that .23 qt low. My preference for the high-revving 2.0L is to have all the oil I can in it to factory max. I do a lot of mountain and interstate driving, I like the extra .23qt.

Well I didn't even know this issue existed. Nice to know though, in case anything concerning it comes up in our dealership. Thanks for the info!

I would expect a SB be issued sometime since it affects so many vehicles, when I see it I'll post it, in case it takes time to make the dealership rounds.
