Hey all...02 Sonata 4cyl gls. My check engine light has come on, and now I can't put gas in it. Start putting gas in, it just burps back and shuts off the pump. Pump again, same thing. Takes like 10 minutes just to put a few dollars into the car as it keeps shutting off, no matter how slow you try to trickle the gas in. Any thoughts on this combination of probs? Also seems to require more pushing on the gas pedal at takeoff to get it to kick in. (More resistance in the pedal). This may just be my imagination, but the light and gas issue aren't. Please help!

I've had the light reset on mine....and resetting still won't fix the gas issue. Is there a flap inside the tank that might be stuck or something?

Firstly bring the car to normal operating temperature by driving for 15 minutes or so. Now open the bonnet and disconnect the earth lead from the battery, ensure this is not touching any part of the bodywork - insulate if necessary - and wait 5 minutes. Next depress the foot brake for 20 seconds - this will completely discharge the ECU's capacitors via the brake lights. The next step (to be carried out immediately, while the engine is still warmed-up) is to carefully re-connect the battery earth lead, close the bonnet and now drive the car in a spirited fashion (accelerating rapidly through the gears, full-throttle straights etc. etc.) for a full 30 minutes. Try to choose a quiet time on the roads for this, (i.e. early on a Sunday morning!).
This period of driving will `re-educate` your ECU into adopting more aggressive timing curves and alter the fuelling to match. It will also allow the unit to recognise any modifications you have made and to react accordingly. If, on the other hand, you are not interested in outright performance, but are more concerned with economy and flexibility, use your normal driving style during this 30-minute run!.

It is more likely your charcoal canister not letting your tank vent. Therfore not letting it fuel properly and also the cel would come on for that. Just a thought though. Good luck

Interesting. Charcoal Cannister, eh? Is that a diy type of job, or mechanic needed?

The charcoal canister should be located behind the drivers rear whell not too difficult. Might get a better opinnion first and at least check the code because the canisters are not cheap. let me know.

Do you know what they worked on in the shop those two times? Be nice to narrow it down right off the bat.

I don't know how to fix this issue but I could suggest a work around until somebody figures it out. 1. Buy a Gas Can 2. Fill The Gas Can 3. Use the Gas can to fill your car.

I read that you said to not fill up when the car is running, my wife does this all the time during the winter when it is cold out, I live in Minnesota. I bet this is why, now what do I have to do to get it back to normal? I am guessing this is the reason.
Thanks

Ended up taking charcoal canister off and blowing it out works fine now, better than bringing it back into the shop and paying for a new one. Whish I would have done this the first time.

A couple of comments to make.
One, fuelling a car while it's running is asking to get blown up. Stupid move, period. The car is not grounded, and having it running is a source of ignition, and fuel-vapour is ever-present around a gas station, especially when fuelling your car. It's not allowed in Canada for that reason. The gas-station attendant won't even turn the pump on here, until your car is turned off. You can research that to your own ends, but that's just plain stupid, and I live just north of the Minnesotan that made that comment. This is not a flame, btw, it's a fact, and winters get a lot colder where I am than where you are. Stay alive!
Secondly, if you're having trouble fuelling, it's like the fuel-tank vent filter that is plugged. It's there to vent off air as the tank is filled. If it's plugged, air can't escape and will cause the issue you're describing with no chance to fill the tank shy of trickling it in.

Hello
I had the same problem on my 2002 . The check engine light and problems feuling the vehicle. The solution was replacing the fuel vent filter located just behind the drivers side rear wheel.

Hey all. As I started this, I should put my fix in here. The light is off! What did we do to fix it....nothing. I've found that if I fuel up my car, I need to put the nozzle in, then turn it so it's almost in upside down. This works. If I fuel it normally, the light comes on. Stays on. Only goes away when I refuel upside down. Weird, but works.
