I just got a 2008 Sonata Limited. It was an 'executive' car with 3,500 miles on it. I've had it for a week, it runs great, lots of power, good handling, etc. But I have one problem: When it's cold outside, there is a pronounced creak from the passenger side lower right corner of the windshield when going over uneven bumps in the road. Lateral bumps that don't 'twist' the car don't make it creak. After the sun is on the car and the windshield is warmer, the sound is gone. When I took it back to the dealer, of course it didn't make a sound.

Isn't there a known problem relating to this? A TSB that someone can link me to? That's the only problem with the car...and it's only very noticeable because the car is so quiet and smooth.

I'm new to this forum, but it looks to be very helpful

Thanks. I did try searching, but couldn't find anyone who had an explanation, or if the TSB procedure 'fixed' the problem. I'll call the dealer Monday to see if they know 'anything' about it.

I downloaded that TSB, however it shows that the creak is at the top of the windshield. Mine is definately from the lower passenger far right side or the windshield. I can't seem to make it creak with hand pressure, or go away by pressing in various areas of the windshield or instrument panel. Just FYI.

My 08 does this as well. I believe the sound is coming from the area where the dash section contacts the defroster vent area.

And, it's affected by temperature as well? Louder when cold, nonexistent when warm? How long have you had your Sonata? I tried applying pressure to the dash, defroster vents, etc. with no results. I think it's under the plastic cowl cover where the glass stops and it meets the body, inaccessible without removing some stuff.

I bought it in September 07 and once the cold weather hit I noticed the sound. It seems to start when the temps are around 60 or below.

Same with mine. It only bothers me because it's a brand new car (of course), and otherwise, it is so quiet inside, even on bad roads. I drove a 2001 Corolla for 7 years, so you know where I'm coming from. Have you taken yours to the dealer to have them look at it? Or, are you just going to leave it? Thanks for the dialogue.

I'm going to take it back to the dealer before it starts to really warm up around here (if I can find time).

:00000732:

Well, it could be the windshield or the defroster. Creaks and rattles in the dash area are notoriously hard to find and fix.

Found it and fixed it: The noise in my windshield was coming from the passenger side pillar, towards the cowl. I briefly sprayed WD-40 in the crevice between the windshield and pillar from the outside (there's a rubber piece there that I had to gently pry). I could see that the glass was close to a body part under there. It was 28 this morning here, and I drove briskly over ever bump I could find. NO sound at all!

So, I will pick up the Hyundai recommended lubricant for the windshield creak problem (Krytox GPL 105) from the manufacturer on Monday and use that if the noise returns. They are 10 minutes from here. I don't want to spray any more WD-40, even though they say it is compatible with rubber and plastic, because it is an adhesive solvent. I can post pictures if anyone wants...

I hope this works for others...

I have a separate posting about the same problem with the "rear" glass in my new '08 Sonata, which I just bought on 4/6/08. The service manager told me about the TSB on the windshield saying this is a first for him for the rear window. They applied the Krytox GPL lubricant to the lower corner, driver's side where I isolated the creak. Now I get the same creak sound on cool mornings on the passenger side when on a bumpy section of road. It's a new car and I'm very dissappointed.

BTW: Hyundai just released a recall with respect to the passenger's side air bag not inflating in a crash. Hope it concerns the seat sensor, which does not detect passengers that weigh less than 120#. Dealer said they don't manufacture the sensor, which is set per Federal specifications. Others have complained to my dealer that light people not being able to turn off the light on the center dash indicating that the passenger air bag not on.

Hi Brad,
I have a similar issue with my '07. That noise was very annoying and I placed a piece of foam there to make it stop… The problem is that foam piece is getting out every 2-3 days and I have to do it again (looks ugly too…).
If you can post any pictures with what needs to be done would be greatly appreciated. I’ll go to the dealer and ask them to take a look and see if Krytox can be used in my case but I doubt they’ll do anything…

Thanks,
C

I tried wedging things in like you did, but it didn't work. No amount of pressing on the windshield or top of the instrument panel changed the sound, which sounds like glass butting up to metal. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post the exact area where I sprayed WD40 tomorrow. It worked for me. My dealer said they would order the Krytox for me, but never did. Since the problem is gone, I let it go.

CBL3.3: Here is where I sprayed a little WD40, between the rubber strip and the windshield glass. You can move the rubber strip just enough to get some spray under there. I only sprayed the bottom 8" or so. Good luck.
