just wondering what happens if you take out both the cat and the muffler and just have piping straight from the motor?

The catalytic converter in your car works by converting a lot of the bad stuff your car puts out (CO2, 2NO, and other bad gasses) into things that are less harmful to the environment. But, this robs some of your horsepower. Taking out the cat could boost the horsepower of your car, but will also make you fail any emissions test. Which is bad. Like, I think you get fined bad. And taking out the muffler just makes the car louder. Which really with a tiburon, just makes the whine more noticeable unless you've done some engine modding.

Some people have had some success in "cheating" the emissions system by fabricating there o2 bung away from the main stream of exhaust flow

Basically drilling a hole into your exhaust somewhere after the cat (weather its an actual cat or a empty look-alike to pass visual inspection) and weld on a 1/4 inch or so pipe which has your o2 bung on the end of it.....thus tricking your ecu into thinking there are less emissions passing through than there actually are

moving the o2 bung is not illegal as far as i know (in the usa anyway) but having a fake cat is....but that doesen't mean they will check....

I say replace the entire exhaust system with stainless steel headers, high flow cat and a straight thru muffler (maybe 1 with a removable silencer).
