Latest figures.

Filled up today. Had covered 775km and got 5.0 l per 100k.

I was a little disappointed. A few days ago we had achieved 4.8 and then the Hyundai dealer sent a driver to pick up our i30 for some checking relating to an engine issue. When he returned it some 150k later it was up to 5.2. After 3 days of careful driving I got it back to 5.0.

Even the wife is now conscious of her driving technique and less of a rev head (LOL).

Bob

Bob here (yet again). I am more and more convinced that provided you drive carefully, without being heavy footed, It is possible to get 5.0l per 100k or just under that. Filled up again having done 298k and got a fuel consumption of 4.8l per 100k. This included a drive into Adelaide through the hills on the SE Freeway and return, plus of course some city driving. I never really noticedany increased fuel consumption in the city, but then Adelaide is not Sydney or Melbourne.

I am finding manual calculation of fuel consumption matches the trip computer. As I said elsewhere, the trip computer's distance to empty is out at the top end but zeros in on a more accurate estimate closer to empty. I am wondering if the trip computer is learning its maximum distance to empty. On Saturday it gave 725k after filling up and today it gave 763k. Interesting?

Overall, we are very happy with the fuel consumption figures we are getting.

Bob

Hi again,

Just filling everyone in on the latest fuel economy figures. Put some more fuel in today., but did not fill up.

Have done 890km since last filling up and the trip meter said I had 135k to empty. Put in 21.6l and the guage went up to just over half full. The trip computer now says I have 479k to empty. I figure that last figure is way out, probably by as much as 100k.

Overall, this last tank of diesel has resulted in the trip computer giving an average consumption of 4.9l/100k

:) I'm all smiles at this end :)

Bob

Just had my first fill up. This is a SX CRDi automatic and was only really used in city mode. 540.9km and 39.42l = 7.28 l/100km. Which compared with my trade in a 2006 Honda Jazz VTi 1.5 manual got 7.5 l/100km for the same use. So overall I'm impressed, can't wait to do some longer distance touring and see what I get then, the Jazz used to drop to 5.3 - 5.5 depending on the run. :)

Hi Everyone,

Just putting my 2 cents worth in (as usual)...

Have had a few cool autumn days so not using the air, find I can consistently get 5.2 ltrs p/100kms around town (going by the trip computer which has proven fairly accurate to date) now that converts to around 54MPG (Imperial Gallons/not US) in the old money...

Even with a 20c premium on Diesel that is still pretty sensational (there I go using that word again) :bigemo_harabe_net-03:

Cheers,

Dazz

Hi,

It is good to see a range of postings in this thread, including the city driving figures and the newer auto i30 diesel.

My info this time is not so much the fuel consumption achieved, but the changes we are getting with our trip computer distance to empty. Yesterday when my wife filled up (with an average 4.9l/100k on the trip computer for the last tank), the distance to empty went up to 830k, the highest it has registered to date.

This adds to my belief that the trip computer distance to empty may in fact become morerealistic as the computer gains more information about fuel consumption.

What do other owners feel? Is you distance to empty figure increasing?

Bob

Hi Bob (and others)

Because the distance to empty seems so pessimistic I have been pretty much ignoring that function. I'm sure if I was stuck in the woop woop with only 50km showing on the screen I'd take more notice.

It definately seems to be more accurate when fuel gets lower. I will take more notice from now on so I can make a valid contribution to this thread.

Interestingly, my brother drove his VW Eos around the other day for about 80kms with the low fuel warning and got down to 10km remaining on his trip computer before he chickened out and filled up. It would be interesting to try that in one of our vehicles and then see how much we could squeeze in!

Cheers,

Dazz

Dazz,

What sort of driving is your "around town"?

I am only on my second tank (car only came with 20 litres) and have done about 620Km so far so still running in. All of my trips have been between 10 and 18 Kms and pretty stop start with traffic lights etc.

I am showing 6.6 l/100km on the computer, which seems quite high compared to yours. I guess the fact that when I am moving I seem to spend the whole time in 3rd gear (to keep the revs above 2000 for "running in") at 60km/h may have an impact. I have been varying my speed and intend to take a longer trip before I hit the 1000Km mark.

Just curious as to whether I should expect better economy down the track!!

Cheers,

Hi Hadders,

It's about 7kms from our house to the CBD and the same distance to where I work. Devonport, where I live is a small city with around 25,000 population and so traffic flows fairly smoothly only usually encounter 3 or 4 sets of lights on a trip to town. Bit of up and down hills averaging about 50kph.

Must admit I do try to drive smoothly and although I varied the revs a bit during the 1st 1000km (I've done around 2100kms now) I tend to potter around in 4th when I'm on the flat. (usually give her a bit of a rev through a short 80km section)

I leave the trip computer on the Ltrs per 100km setting and without being fanatical I do feather the accelerator a bit so as not to waste fuel. Every now and then I like to give her her head but usually have to wait until I'm out of town.

Hope this helps! (Don't know how Bob and others do under 5!!!)

Dazz

Bob, Id take the DTE figures with a grain of salt, they are only approximations ( same with fuel gauges ), this applies to all cars with trip comps.

I go by the odometer and kms travelled, plus how much fuel I put into the tank, so I have a very good idea on fuel mileage.

If you switch from city driving to open road, and vice versa often, the DTE can vary greatly, so it helps by measuring what you already know and that is the raw numbers and just calculate the results yourself.

Dont forget to reset the trip meter at every refuel.

Our i30 has covered just over 5000k now. Yesterday my wife drove to Adelaide and back. She played with resetting the fuel usage quite a bit on the return journey and got some unbelievable results. Sotoday it was my turn to do the same trip and I thought I would check it out for myself.

At Crafers (top of the range I reset the computer. The road I was travelling for the next 45 minutes is a freeway through the Adelaide Hills to Murray Bridge, a distance of 60k. I sat on a farely constance speed of between 100 and 110 kph. At the end of this section the computer read 4.0l/100k.

The next section of road was a winding country road, relatively flat. After this 70k section, traveling between 90 and 100 kph, the average had increased to 4.3l/100k, still quite respectable.

I'm impressed,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Do you think your economy is improving now you have a bit of mileage up?

I'm very happy with my car and the 5.2 - 5.4 that we are getting but would have to drive everywhere with a feathered throttle to get into the 4's!

Cheers,

Dazz

Dazz,

Undoubtedly the engine is settling in and the evidence is in the fuel economy we are getting. The figure today (4.3l/100k) is a little bit distorted because it is all highway driving, the first biton a very good road (yes, there are hills, but there are also downhill sections as well). If I include all driving, then it is up around 4.9 to 5.2.
