Hello Santa Fe owners. I am new to the forum due to an experience I am going thru with my 60K maintenance involving the timing belt replacement. I have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L. This is the second Santa Fe I have owned, and really love the vehicle. Decided not to trade it in just yet, but would invest in the 60K maint. ($1392) to keep it until the 09's come out.
Well, when I went to get my SF, 2 1/2 days later, it was making a loud whining noise. They said it was the power steering pump. Would have to bring it back on Monday, this was on a Thur. Meanwhile, while I was driving it, the MIL comes on. Service advisor says it is o.k. to drive, just indicates the power steering pump needs replaced.
Second attempt to pick up my SF, the noise is still there. This is after they have now done the 60K maintenance, replaced the PS pump and replaced the ERG due to the MIL. So once again I am in a rental car, and now the problem seems to be the tension idle pulley???
Has anyone experienced the timing belt replacement in their Santa Fe, and if so, did you experience all these other issues??? I don't know if it is just the dealership techs that worked on my vehicle or just bad timing. I have never had any trouble at all with this vehicle or my previous '01 Santa Fe. :liebe011:

:00000732: santa04,
No, I did not have these problems when I had the dealer replace my timing belt. The idler tension pulley could be the problem. I am sorry that the dealer did not use one of the oldest home mechanic tricks to diagnose your noise...a long flat bladed screwdrive and an ear. To diagnose the source of a noise, you place the tip of the screwdrive on the suspect item, and put you ear against the handle. This confirms if the noise is coming from that area.
Find another dealer now....a failing power steering pump is not connected to the OBDII check engine light system. You have been BS'd. the pump could not give you a code, and the service advisor made a Silly Wild Guess.
Tensioner pulleys can fail. You just were unlucky statistically to have this fail now. Since you just went over 60K miles, you are out of the bumper to bumper new car warranty.

Thanks to those that responded to my timing belt story. Unfortunately my Santa Fe is still with the same dealer. They have now replaced the idler tension pulley twice, the power steering pump and now the rack!!! They have done the front end alignment and NOW they are saying all the hoses need to be replaced!!!!
I keep telling them the power steering pump should not be the problem and even went to a local mechanic to view a diagram of a timing belt on a 3.5L Santa Fe. It doesn't even touch the PSP. But the advisor keeps telling me it is in the steering! So far they have paid for everything, and they are keeping me in a rental at their expense.
I think if I move it to a different dealership I might have to pay, but not sure on that. If Hyundai doesn't cover the costs the dealership should because all this started after they worked on my car.
So bottom line, it has been a month now and I am getting tired of this whole mess. Does anybody know what steps I might take next? Hire a lawyer???
