Hi, while a grinding sound from drum-brakes is normal after long time parking (due to slight surface rust buildup), it is less when the rear brakes are correctly adjusted. Yes, the rear are self adjusting. BUT, they can only do it if the hand?parking brake is set correctly. to insure this, do the following:
First, you loosen that center nut (under the center console at its rear end), until there is a tiny bit of play between the nut and the "YOKE". Then you adjust the rear brake shoes brakes. For this, you have to remove the wheels & drums. << OR >>, You let rear brakes do it themselves. Now, since the rear "SELF ADJUSTERS" are in the proper position (due to the fact, that the h-brake free-play has been established), they will adjust the rear brakes bit-by-bit every time you apply the brakes. At the beginning, you may notice that the pedal may be too low, but it will come up more & more after each brake application. Once the brake is fully “SELF ADJUSTED” (which won’t take too long), you will never need to adjust the foot or hand brake again. A correctly adjusted h-brake must have 6 to 9 notches when pulled.
