Evening All
Had my i30 diesel since Nov last year.I have only done 3500km so far but am still very happy. Its giving me 16.5km/l on just abouit every tank. The only thing I have noticed is that the speedo is not very accurate at 100, true speed is around 90.(checked this with gps)but at least I should not get any fines at that speed. The only thing I have done is take the std wheels off and fit some 17 inchers.IF SOMEONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO POST A PICTURE I WILL DO SO.Taking it from Adelaide to Melbourne and back in 2 weeks, so will see what consumption it will do on the open road.
Has anyone had any problems so far?
cheers for now

Haggis,

Will be picking our i30 up late on Friday (in Murray Bridge) aftera 3 month wait. I shall test out the speedo to see how accurate it is, using a GPS as you did, and post a response here by Sunday evening. Interestingly, the Getz we have is doing about 97-98kph(according to the GPS) when the speedo is showing 100kph.

We will be taking the i30 (a white diesel SLX with Protectz pack) to Mildura on Saturday, returning on Sunday. It should give us a good idea of how it drives on the open road.

I shall be booking the i30 in for its 100km service a week after taking delivery as I do about 750km a week to and from work alone each week (open road driving in flat country).

Would be keen to swap experiences with you and other i30 owners as we get to know our vehicles.

Hiya haggis.

I have a 1.6 crdi diesel and as part of the running-in process have to vary the speeds I drive at, between 2000 and 4000 rpm. While doing this going home from work last night (mostly motorway) I varied speeds between 55mph and 70mph (4 or 5 minutes at each speed). My NavMan icn330 satnav was reporting 62mph when I was doing 60 (on the clock) and 71mph when the dial was showing 70.

Maybe our satellites are better in the northern hemisphere :w00t:

The speed check on the Princes Hwy (Geelong to Melbourne) reports mine at around 94km/h when the speedo reads 100km/h.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue.

I've done around 2000km in my 1.6 crdi since early Jan. My only issue was a fuel leak coming out of drive shaft seals. That was fixed up nice and quick and had no issues since.

I'm pretty sure my speedo reports over also. Remembering notinging that my GPS was reporting lower speeds, but thought it may have been the GPS that was wrong.

Only other issue has been the one i mentioned about the ipod in the other thread.

I tend to get around 6.8lt/100km, but mainly stop start driving in peak hour. Driving to Aulbury in a few weeks so will be interesting to see how that goes.

Good to hear, the i130 diesels all going ok trouble free. about speedo, could be caused by wheel & tyre change if diamiter of the new tyre is different to stock ( like larger diam will have a greater travel in one turn, or smaller diam will have less travel in one turn) are the speedo's electric or gearbox cable driven? if electric could ask service department if they can calabrate them, if cable driven would need to change gear ratio at gear box, but most new cars would be electric or electronic now.
i'm still thinking about buying one, i'm slow at these things but still like the i130 drove my friends Mazda3 2lt diesel 6 speed not long ago was nice but i like the i130 gearbox better, my friend thinks the Mazda feels stronger than the i130 but in what way i do not know.

hi Lakes
I have checked the speedo with both sets of wheels 15 and 17 and there is not much difference between the 2.Its not to bad at 60 but from 80 its about 5 out and 100 gets close 10km/h out.As long as its under reading it will keep me out of trouble. The build quality is good and there are no rattles.I got one of the first in Adelaide (in november) and have only just started seeing others on the road.I have driven the mazda 3 and 6, they look great but i did not like them.(thats only my personal preferance).
cheers for now

Hi Haggis,
i thought you must have been one of the first, i just got home from another road test in an i130 slx manuel diesel the gearbox and the motor feel better or nicer to drive than the Mazda , the mazda could have been just a little bit faster but i'm not after a fast car just a reliable and nice to drive good economy car, the slx was a bit pricy and i could not really notice much difference for the $, like no cruise control or trip computer so salesman said, he also said if this one goes will be a 4 month wait.
i'm just going to test drive the ford focus see what thats like and what they will give me one for.
when you drive to victoria they have a speed check that seems accurate. i have a GPS but have not used it to check speedo's but they should be an accurate way of testing.

Hi all,

The speedo is definitely out. Our SLX has 16" rims, by the way. I agree with Haggis, it seems more accurate at lower sppeds, but is still out.

At 80mph on speedo GPS gave a reading of 76-77, at 90 the GPS read 86, at 100 GPS read 95-96 and at 110 GPS read 105.

It would be interesting to see if an electronic adjustment could be made.

We discovered another issue today which has me baffled. And this one is very interesting indeed. I say we, because my wife discovered it. As we left Mildura on the way home (she wanted to gain some experience driving in traffic), she complained that the car would not pull away in 2nd gear. I thought she was dreaming. When it approached 3000rpm, the accelerator just wouldn't increase rpm. She tried it in several gears, and nothing.

On the open road this was not a problem as at highway speed, the engine gets nowhere near 3000 rpm. There was no warnig light on the dash and up to 3000 rpm, the engine responded normally. The fuel consumption on the trip computer did not show anything abnormal.

At the Vic/SA border, we changed drivers and I tested it out and and sure enough, up to 3000 rpm, everything was normal. Then our teenage girls wanted an icecream in Loxton. As I wouldn't let them eat it in the new car, we stopped down by the river and ate the icecreams.

Now, this was the first time we had stopped the engine since the problem was first noticed. When we started up and drove off, everything was back to normal. Whatever it was, I have no idea, but it would appear the engine management system must have reset itself.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

I shall get my wife to explain it to the service department on Friday when she takes the i30 in for its 1000 km service.

I'm mystified! :puzzled:

How strange.

I did read somewhere that the ECU remaps itself according to your driving style. I'll try to figure out where I saw that. The article mentioned that constant city driving will affect motorway/highway performance.

My service interval, BTW, is 12.5K miles. No mention that it should be brought in earlier than that (6 months driving for me).

Hope you get it sorted.

As for the speedo being out. I replaced my NavMan icn330 with a NavMan S90i and if the GPS is accurate, then my speedo is not, as it's over-reporting the speed much the same way as yours is.

PS.. is it wise to accelerate to 110mph in your new motor? :innocent:

Shambles

Not 110mph, 110kph. Sorry if I mislead you. 110kph is achieved at about 2300rpm, well within the limits stated in the manual for running in the motor.

The only issues I have had with my i30SR are:

*Speaky drivers seat - fixed by moving the seat to a new position slightly - hasn't happened since even with extra adjustment

*Front bumper on passengers side where it meets the headlight has a noticable gap compared to the drivers side (minor, but I'm fussy lol)

*Rear spoiler (put on in Brisbane) started to come away from the car. The local Hyundai dealer fixed it, but has ordered a new spoiler as they claim the one installed is 'buckled'. No charge to me of course and to be honest, it looks fine to me!

*Slight engine rattle when cold, and put into reverse. Comes and goes though, and seems to be going away. Have put it down to one of those 'running in' things.

*Very rarely my new-gen Ipod has minor issues when connected to the stereo with the Hyundai Ipod cable. My older Ipod seems to work flawlessly.

Other than that she runs like a dream. The auto is silky smooth and the A/C and stereo (amplified in the SR) are FANTASTIC. I'm getting between 9-11L/100km around town (depends how lead footed I am) and easily around 7-8L/100km on the highway (2.0L petrol remember).

I just noticed in the paper on the weekend that the local dealer is now selling SLX petrol autos for $25,990 drive away! I see a LOT of i30's driving around at the moment. certainly becoming a popular car.

Nice mags!!

Why doesn't it have the model name on the front door? Did you take it off? All i30's I've seen have either SX/SLX/SR on the front of the front doors on each side.

Looks great Ian (Haggis). I can see the SX when I look close enough.

My wife thinks the 16" rims look large and the low profile tyres small. Lucky we don't have 17" rims or she would think we had bike tyres. I have heard of some people fitting 18" rims. Imagine how they would look.

I shall have to take a few pics of our SLX (also white) and also one alongside our Getz Click (sky blue). Love the bright blue seats in the Click we have.

Today has been a very hot day and I have only ventured out to the garage a few times to check a few things out. The i30 is having a rest today. We have done 735km since picking it up on Fri at 5:30pm. Off to work tomorrow and another 145km on the clock.
