I experienced a similar problem recently which turned out to be no fault in the car, just the way it was being treated. If your car won't start for the same reason it would explain the absence of any error codes.

The problem (turning, but not firing) first occurred after several stalls happening just a few minutes after starting (I was teaching my girlfriend manual transmission :whistling: ) so at first I suspected dead battery, but from multiple attempts to start the engine it would occasionally work, which didn't seem like a battery issue to me, so I started looking for another pattern.

Eventually I realised that on the bad starts we were either turning the key too quickly, or turning the key too soon after the stall, either way, the fuel pump wasn't giving the engine it's medicine so to speak.

I now ensure that I turn the key to position 2 long enough to hear the fuel pump do it's job (about a 1 second whirr) before turning the key the final ignition position. If I don't hear the pump come on then I turn the key back to 0 and try again, eventually it will whirr, and it saves the battery & sparks from attempting a lost cause.

The car has never failed to fire since.

It was such a simple solution I felt rather silly, and it sounds from your posts that you do have a more serious issue, but it doesn't cost anything to try so it might be worth a go :)

Good luck!

Read my last post, Post number 20 on page one. I have had no problems anymore since the dealer tightened up the replacement CKP Sensor and used a longer bolt to hold it in. That was my problem. Intermittent connection of the CKP sensor was causing erratic starts.

Car runs super now, cranks first time every time and gets 36 MPG highway to boot, with an automatic! WHOO HOO!!

That's great.

I have the same symptoms. My 2002 accent will randomly not start. Engine will turn and turn but no fire and no smell of gas. I replaced the fule pump and filter and still same problem. Starts one time but not the next. It will start with starting fluid which is why I kept thinking it was a fuel problem. I'm going to replace the crank sensor today if I can.

Thanks so much!

Rob

If you use aftermarket crank sensor, check the bolt length!!!

Initially, I replaced mine and it still wasn't cranking all the time. Turns out the lip is slightly different length on the aftermarket when compared to the factory one, So I had to use a longer bolt to hold it securely in place! It was coming loose and not making good contact!

Also, it would be helpful to run an OBDII scan on your engine and see if it's throwing any codes. My Car was initially throwing code for the Crank Sensor, but it went away when I replaced the sensor.

You still need to scan your engine with OBDII for codes. It could be the Cam Sensor. Either one of these sensors will cause the engine to not think it's turning. These sensors aren't exactly cheap, so it helps if you can be sure it's the sensor before you replace it. I rented one from Autozone, it was free, you just pay a deposit which you get back when you return the scanner.

Hyundai's software is so flakey you really can't believe everything it tells you.

The Sensors ain't silly expensive as long as you source oem parts from a none franchised dealer.

Using the after market parts is asking for trouble tho .......... As much as it pains me to admit it, there are people around that can make poorer quality components than Hyundai do :whistling:

Hey,
Question for you...when you replaced the crankshaft sensor, did you have to drain the oil to do it?

Thanks,
Steve

Greetings, My wife's car is doing basically the same thing. We have had very similar experiences. Hers dies for no apparent reason. There is no indication of spark to speak of and then :w00t: it's a miracle! It runs. After reading through this topic, I can say that I'm pretty glad to have found this site. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm going to test the camshaft sensor, and the crankshaft sensor and see whats going on. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Best wishes, Tidewater

Hello fellows hyundaiist

Well I recently bought an accent 1.3 GS from 2000 (52000miles) for my girl and it broke down few days after I got it. It was the camshaft sensor...it cost me 150 euros to fix it.
It might be a common error but I was scared of buying a lemon...

I hope the car wont break down again...

good forum :right:

well I have the engine light on again...
According to the mecanic it is a mixture problem
As long as it doesnt avoid the engine to run it is fine with me

but in the long term, I start to be very worried about this car.

any idea what would be the problem this time?

Jack
