I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent.. I'm about to hit 60,000 and when I got my brakes change they also recommended that I change my timing belt soon.. Now, my boyfriend who has messed around with cars before (used to hang out at a junkyard where they took apart and put together all sorts of old cars) says he can do it for me.. I found out that a timing belt can cost me about $40-60.. if the dealer changes it. it will cost me $330.. if I change it with my mechanic it'll be around $200... the difference in pricing implies to me (and i know nothing about cars) that this is a pretty big job.. not at all like changing the oil or spark plugs or air filter..

should i trust my boyfriend to do this, although he's by no means a mechanic?? or should i save myself a possible headache and just take it somewhere to get it done by a professional??

Hi!.......best to have this work carried out by a Hyundai Dealership.
At the same time they can check your ECU for any stored fault codes.

The timing belt should have been replaced @ 50K miles, so don`t delay.....if it snaps it could wreck your engine!.

Cheers,
Nick.
