Hi I thought this would be a good thread to post here since I would like to know what to expect and to avoid about the 1995 Accent since I recently bought one cheap. I am a car enthusiast.. and to be honest.. I bought the car for my wife to drive around town so that I could stop being a TAXI.

So far.. I'm experiencing some 'clunking' in the tranny and at times it will give out and all I have is reverse.. it's an automatic. But if I leave the car sit for awhile.. I can drive it again. Weird. Of all the cars I've owned in my time.. I honestly haven't experienced anything like that before. Any help would be great.

List your problem or troubleshooting here for all your 1995 Accents.

I assume it is an auto-tranny. In what condition is the tranny fluid (ATF) If the wrong ATF was filled, the shifting will be harsh, bangy, slippy.....
Best is to flush the oil, anf FILL WITH HYUNDAI ATF ONLY. If wrong type fluid was filled before, you may have to repeat the flush after a little while.

I have just been advised against "flushing through" any oil systemn on the Accent due to the fact that the flushing fluids used could damage the internal bearings and seals.

The best method I've seen (which requires caution) is to run the engine for about 10 minutes to warm the oil up - hence making it thinner and run better, and then drain the engine / ATF - but BEWARE - the oil will probably be extremely HOT and may burn your skin so undo to drain plug with a spanner and let it fall into the container you put underneath - you can retrieve it later once the oil has all drained out and cooled down (it will stay warm for a while).

Being an Aircraft Engineer, we never flush an engine through with anything other than the oil that should be used in that engine. Any flush through / cleaning compound has the possibility of getting stuck in the bearings and preventing the lubricants from lubricating it for a while which can lead to failure of that bearing, and the engine. But please note, aircraft engines operate at a much higher RPM and for longer than car engines - so this kind of problem in a car engine will not be dramatic, but gradual, getting worse over years rather than 10 / 20 flights. So don't panic - my advice is to flush through with new, clean and correct engine oil.

Well, I haven't had to do anything with the car so far.. since I haven't experienced any problems since that one incident... weird I tell ya. You would think that if there is something wrong in the tranny that it would be a reaccuring problem.. but no. The car has driven fine since then. Maybe just a Gremlin?.. LOL. :wink2:

I've mentioned a this in previous posts about transmission failure. I used to own a 1997 Hyundai excel/Accent where my transmission would fail at random intervals and gear changes would cease.

Hyundai Australia were so kind to assist with the problem since the trained dealer was not competent to diagnose this fault. Hyundai took the computer system out and reset the system reinstalled it and tested it. They changed the transmission program to allow the car to only stay in first gear and reverse. They rewired the entire transmission system costing a fair bit and finally solved my issue.

In your case it could be the transmission lever cable not inposition as you mention that the car can only reverse and not move forward, if the lever and cable are not aligned this can cause the change problem, although a gear failure is usually a wiring harness/Loom issue in an automatic. And we all know that Hyundai wiring systems (prior to 2000) were pone to stress fracture and failure, some times heat can expand the insulation around the wires and if it's a stretched loom it may detached, under ice conditions the loom will contract and seperate the loom. :)
