i have a 98 automatic accent, at first the tranny would kinda slip just while changing gears, and when to going into overdrive wouold act as if it were in neutral, let the rpm's idle down then it would go into over drive. then all of a sudden with no warning i lost all gears except for 1st, and if i rod it hard and let rpm's die down it may or may not go into 3rd, no 2nd at all. i can turn ignition on without car running and pull gear shifter from park to neutral and hear a humming noise near the radiator. does anyone know if i need a new transmission or if it may be something electrical? thanks so much in advance.

Dear crzy,

You have a 10 year old Accent with probably 120k-140k miles. All your symptoms sound like slippling clutch packs in your automatic transmission.

Check you fluid level and inspect for burned odor. When was your last transmission fluid exchange?

Still, your transmission is slipping in 2nd gear, 3rd gear, and Overdrive. First gear is still working for now. Get to a transmission repair shop and have it inspected, but I think you need a transmission rebuild.

Byron
