Hello all
My air conditioning system on my 2005 Tucson starts to smell musty / mouldy after~ 30 seconds of putting it on. The smell then dissipates a bit. I've taken it to the dealer 2 times and its booked in for the 3rd time next week. So far the dealer has just put 2 of those deodorising 'bombs' in it and it seems to clear it for ~ 3 weeks and then it comes back. I think more need doing but they can't detect a fault
My passenger side footwell did get very wet ~ 1 yr ago for some reason in very heavy rain and I'm still wondering if this is connected. The dealer dried it out then and checked for leaks and couldn't find any.
Any similar problems. I've read the one where there is a TSB and I've given the this Hyundai TSB to the dealer , but they say that this is not the problem

Thanks for this. This has already been done a while ago but the garage are insisting they can't find a leak . (Horbury Bridge Hyundai in Wakefield)

Dear Dean,
The UK is extremely humid, so operating your A/C would pull a lot of water out of the air. This evaporator coil is in a plastic box with a drain. Moisture is supposed to condense out on the evaporator coil, run down the coil into the bottom of the box, move to the drain, out onto the ground.
Several members have reported that algae/mold growth in this drain tube has clogged it. The smell you get is from stagnant water sitting in the bottom of the blower box because the drain is clogged.
This can be fixed by simply using a wire or the straight piece cut from the bottom rung of a metal hanger, running this wire up the tube from beneath your Tucson, work back and forth to loosen the mold clog, and it should drain out.

Ok - I'll see if I can do what Byron suggests also. I have the smell (like wet horsehair or something) during times when I don't need the AC or heater. If I turn on the AC or heat it will go away.

Another wet weekend - another soaking passenger footwell. It's booked in to the garage for the 5th time. I haven't even been driving it over the weekend so the water is coming from above and not from road splash. Also, there was water lying on top of the pollen filters !!
Taking it back to the garage is getting tedious, but if no luck this time, head office will have to take it further.
It's pretty likely that the smell and the water are linked

Dealer says that this isn't the problem and it would be easier if it was.
Again after standing in heavy rain for a few days rain water is coming in on the passenger foot well (dripping/running down from behind the glove box ) and lying on top of the pollen filters. Therefore we guess that it's coming in through the fresh air intake, even though a deflector has been fitted. Back to the garage again !

I've no clue either. The car's going back to the garage next week to be looked at again and I've sent a letter to Hyundai UK highlighting the problem, asking them to liase with the garage to fix it. Don't know what to do next !

Just had a reply from the garage and they've found a tiny pinprick in one of the welds behind the heating ducts. They've managed to get water to pour through it. Just got to fill the hole in with some instant weld (or something) and perhaps thats it. I hope so It's been quite a long struggle to find the leak !!

had same problem. paid big bucks for them to change the filter in the car, thats located behind the glove box. smell came back. they tried to mask the smell by putting in floral scented windshield washer fluid. ugh. called to complain when the odor came back again. got different person this time at dealership and she told me that i can fix it myself with a $5 can of lysol. she said that the vents at the base of the windshield sometime store rancid water or get some mold on them. just take the can and spray into the vents she said and that should fix it. i did and it did. been a year now, and problem hasnt been back, altho i did spray this week as a precaution.

Hi
My water leak seems to be fixed now, but I still get an air con smell when the air con starts up. It then disappears. What is this Lysol stuff ? Also - when you say spray it into the vents under the windshield, do you mean the plastic thing at the bottom of the windshield on the outside of the car ?

Thanks
I'll try something similar - Dettol antiseptic spray. I don't think we cen get Lysol in the UK , but Dettol should be the same
