Hello all,

It's been a while since I last posted.

I have an issue with a loud buzzing sound when my car goes over 3500RPM.

It's coming from just in front of the driving position. AN engineer told me it may be the exhaust heat sheild.

It hasn't affected the performance of my car but is slightly annoying when I push it a bit.

Any advice is more than welcome.

Thanks

Sorry mate, I don't quite follow.
Before the turbo as in

air filter to before the turbo

exhaust outlet to before the turbo.

Got a pic so I can see what you mean?
Sorry if I'm being annoying but you are being very helpful.

I have the same problem it used to make the noise at 3000+ then it stopped and moved too 4000+ but only when the rpm's are droppping.

There is a metal strap that holds the front pipe right befour the flex pipe. on mine that is rusted out and i belive that that rattling.

"Headers" is American terminology for what is referred-to in the U.K. as the exhaust manifold......a cast iron component on our cars.

It is quite likely that it is the tinny heat shield you will see covering the exhaust manifold (when you open the bonnet & look downwards at the front of the engine) which is vibrating.

There is also another thin metal heat shield, visible from underneath the car.....close to the sump....which can also vibrate.
This is primarily there to avoid causing a fire under the car if you park on grass....it can also vibrate noisily!.

Just try bending these shields around a little & hopefully your problem will disappear!.

Cheers,
Nick. :)

On last thing...

Can you advise on exactly what do do with regards to these heat shields?

Do I bend the sides round on the manifold shield?
Do I just bend the shield under the car round a bit more?

THANKS

Hi AJ!

Yup!........just bend the shields a little (on a trial & error basis) to avoid metal-on-metal contact.

Nick. :)

both of my SCoupes did this too. same rpm range but it sounds like it's within the engine. mine makes the noise most when i'm driving slow but when I get on it its not noticable. I don't have the heat shields so I just thought it was a SCoupe thing.

I have the same thing it seems to be getting louder now that I have changed my flex pipe, sometimes I can hear it for a second or two at idle, I really would like to solve this because I use the highway alot and the RPM are right in the 3,500-4,000 range and thats when its the loudest.

I know I don't have any heat shield so it's not that. and I have a brand new rebuilt engine. and my 94 n/a did the same exact thing. has to be a hyundai thing within the engine between 3000-4000 rpm range.

Does anybody here not have this noise?

I beleave it has something to do with the exhaust or something in the firewall, I have no heat shilds none all of them are off and it still makes noise. I can feel it in my feet on the floor and also in the pedals when you rev it to the 3,000-4,000 mark. Is it just me or do you guys experince the same. I am thinking it the cat??? or something in the firewall? It sounds like it comes from the drivers side (left side) somewhere between the computer and the shifter cables.

Sounds like we all got a special little vibration in all our SCoupes!

I'm goign to remove the heat sheilds, especially the one on the bottom.
Then give the rotor a going over.

It could be something witihin the engine but my performance id not affected...maybe we should speak to a hyundai specialist.

I went ot a Hyujdai garage recenrly and they said it was likely to be the lower heat sheild
