I ran out of gas at the end of my driveway, started it and drove 20 feet and it died again. Now it won't run. So I changed the filter and nothing changed. So now I'm looking toward the fuel pump. I was wandering if it could be anything else. Any Help Would be great. THANKS [I] :cigareta:

Could be your fuel pump. They don't like being run dry as the fuel cools the pump. I would suggest connecting a jumper wire from the F/Pump diagnostic connector under the hood (the one with the white blanking cap near the fuel injectors) too the positive side of the battery. You should hear your pump running in the fuel tank. If not you have a stuffed fuel pump and the tank will need to come out. The diagnostic connector bypasses the fuel pump relay so if pump works and car starts, you have an electrical fault in the pump relay/ignition circuit.

To properly diagnose the problem you need a fuel injection pressure gauge to connect into your fuel system. Pressure should be approx 40psi and 46psi with vacuum disconnected on the fuel pressure regulator. Don't forget the basics every car must suck, bang and blow. Check for spark by disconnecting a high tension lead and seeing if it can throw a 10mm spark from high tension lead to the block. Don't hang onto the lead as you may get zapped but fashion something to support the lead 10mm from the engine block.

These earlier hyundai's will bring the check engine light on but only for common sensor faults. The computer can't sense poor spark or poor fuel pressure/quantity.
Does your check engine lamp illuminate?

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, so far I dropped the fuel tank and tested the pump which turned on when I connected power. So I Put tank back in, checked fuses and relays all OK. When I hook power up to the diagnostic connector bypass and pump turns on, but not when disconnected. Now I'm kinda stumped. I'm looking at spark now then I'll see how that goes.

Some common symptoms of ECU failure range from check engine light, injector trouble, erratic start, stalling, running rough, no start at all. Often this is misdiagnosed as distributor, idle speed control motor, etc., if you think you have ECU trouble, often you can pull the computer yourself and inspect it for visible damage, also a strange smell usually accompanies the breakdown.
