So I was on a trip and was time for an oil change. I didn't see a dealership but I spotted a Goodyear Tire store and they were having a $10 off special on oil changes.....

YUP, got hit with "You really need to do these things etc etc etc"

All the extras added up to about $400....

Sorry was my answer,,,,

But thought I would check in here and see if they were right or not, so here is what they said I needed to go with my oil change....

I have a 2001 XG300L with almost 76,000 miles on it:

They said I need word for word from their Quote:

Transmission fluid exchange service

Air Filter & Installation

Power Steering Fluid Exchange Service

Fuel Filter-Fuel Injected & Installation Fuel Filter

3-Step Fuel & Induction System Cleaning 3 Step Throttle Body

Ok, so maybe the Air Filter, it certainly wouldn't hurt to change it.

It used to be easy to change an air filter, just unscrew the wing nut, pop off the cover and swap it out.

I just popped the hood and NO WING NUT :blush-anim-cl:

If anyone knows where it is currently hiding and how hard it is to get to it, I could probably change that but do I honestly need all the rest or how can I possibly tell if I do???

Lots of questions I know but as you can see, I have no clue when it come to auto mechanics and I don't mind doing what has to be done to keep my car running in good condition but I don't want ripped off either...

Fireston, and Midas have a reputation at home for doing exactly that.......

HELP !!! :)

Dear Quigley,

Great that you held your ground. My question for you is: What does the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual say? I don't have an XG owner's manual, but it likely reads similarly to the Tiburon/Coupe

For A/T fluid exchange, normal interval is 105k miles/168k km but severe usage schedule is 30k miles/48k km.

Air filter-always a good idea, just not at shop prices. It is an air box that is secured with 4 snap clips, 2 front 2 rear. The filter is a rectangular assembly with pleats...a little different from the days of the round air filter and the wing nut.

Power steering fluid exchange-NOT in the scheduled maintenance. The shop was very creative on this one. Unless your car was involved in a flood, you never have to exchange your power steering fluid.

Fuel filter-ok to change now but the shop was upselling.

3-step fuel injection cleaning-ok but too expensive in the shop
Step 1- buy 3 cans of a name-brand fuel injection cleaner and put them in the fuel tank
Step 2 - http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ab_auto_fuel...2276265,00.html
Step 3 - buy a can of name-brand spray throttle body/carburetor cleaner ($3)
and one bundle of shop rags ($4). don't use paper towels. remove the intake hose from the throttle body, spray liberally the outside, wipe down, spray liberally the intake bell, wipe down, open the throttle butterfly, spray liberally, wipe down.
Step 4- laugh at the haplessly ignorant customer at the bar that night since he paid for the 18 year old [Scotch] whisky.

the key to all your questions is when was the car last serviced? the XG should have a service every 10,000 miles with a major service including a cam. belt change at 60,000 miles...has this been done?.....the cam. belt change is very important if it snaps on the XG engine it will cost you a fortune, so basically check your service record

Here in Australia that belt is worth around $800 for the part alone and requires a few hours to install so you would certainly know if it was changed or not.
