Hello,

I have a question concerning the rear brake assembly on a 1997 tibruon.

I am sorry if this sounds confusing but I am not sure about the names of the parts. I will do the best that I can to explain the problem

I recently installed new brakes and ran into a problem on the rear brake where I could not bolt the calibar housing back into place. what is happening is that you are supposed to remove the bottom bolt and losen the top bolt and then slide the calibar housing up to change the brakes. my problem is that the bottom bolt will not line up to the part because that part is fused. the part on the top slides in and out and will spin. the part that I am referring to is the part that has the rubber boot over it. I am not sure if this part can be replaced or if the whole assembly has to be replaced.

what I had to do is to put the new brake shoe on the inwad side and I left the old show on the outward side. when the new shoe wears don a little bit, I will try to put on the new shoe and hope I can get it to line up.

thanks in advacne for the help

Dear hixt,

Do you have the 1997 Tiburon rear brakes shown in this picture?

You mentioned brake calipers and brake shoes, so I was confused.

To clarify, disk brakes have a rotor, a caliper, and an inner and outer brake PADs.

Drum brakes have a drum, a small little slave cylinder at the top of a backing plate, and front-side and back-side SHOES.

From what I can tell, I THINK you have the 1997 Tiburon with the rear disc brakes so this write-up assumes disc brakes.

The part you think is fused (has the rubber boot on one end) is the rear brake piston?? The problem is you forgot or did not know that the parking brake engages through the rear brakes by a ratchet that grips the side of the brake piston. The piston must be backed into the brake cylinder bore with a Hyundai special tool.

If you don't have this special tool, you can use long-nose vice grips on the piston body to rotate it back in the bore IF you plut electrical tape or duct tape on the jaws to prevent scratching/scarring the piston outer surface.

Unless the part that is fuzed is the lower guide rod. A new guide rod is available at Autozone or most auto parts stores. Go buy the new guide rod first. It should come in a kit with 2 guide rods, 2 rubber boots, and 2 bolts. Once you have a replacement in hand, you can use vice grips and a rubber mallet to pull the old guide rod out.

Byron,

thanks for the reply. It is the guide rods. I was not sure what they were called and the chilton manual does not mention these parts.

I will go to autozone and get the new guide rods.

for the piston, we used a neddle nose pliers and twisted the piston back into place. it was a real pain. we will try the vice grip idea next time that we change the brakes.

thanks for the help

A few things to note when doing the rear.

As Byron said you need the special tool. However, you don't need the special Hyundai Tool.

Autozone rents a kit (also sells it for like 35 bucks) that had the right adapters to spin it. It is a PITA to do it with needle nose pliers.

I was also able to get a tool that fit on the end of a ratchet for 11 dollars at Carquest Auto Parts that is 4 sided and one of the sides fits into the caliper.

Another thing to note is that around me (mass) the autozone slide bolt kit does not come with the rubber piece. It comes with one straight slide and one that can put the rubber piece on it. I think they really want you to take the rubber piece off your existing slide and put it on.

If I remember correctly I think it was either the Napa slide bolt kit or the Caps auto parts kit that comes with the new rubber. Either way in my experience it is the none rubber slide that gets stuck. Make sure you get some real brake grease (moly) to use. It makes all the difference.

Steve ... Alternator just died so I'll be doing that tomorrow.
