I just got an 08 Elantra and when I purchased it, they indicated that all new Elantras had timing chains just like the Sonatas. They also said that they pretty much lasted the life of the car, and don't need to be replaced along with the 60k mile maintenance. Is this true?

I'm still not sure because in the maintenance log included with the car it lists:

Timing belt Inspect: 60k miles Replace: 75k miles

The ONLY engine available in the HD Elantra in the US is the same Beta II from the XD Elantra. It has a timing BELT, not a timing chain.

This has been verified. Belt on the 2008. The plans to change the 2.0 were delayed. Possibly a future redesign.

RTFM - Read the fvcking manual.

08 Elantras have a timing belt, not a chain. If I recall correctly, it has to be replaced at 90K, but your owner's manual says the mileage for sure.
