Accent High Rpm, motor races up to 3500 rpm

Newbie Group: Members Posts: 6 Joined: 23-January 08 Member No.: 40,226 Status: Location: usa Drives: hyundai accent	My daughter complains that the engine RPM's on her 2001 Hyundai Accent (automatic transmission) accelerate up to 3500 RPMs for no reason, without having to touch the throttle. This only happens in cold weather, even though the engine is warmed up. The check engine light does not come on when this is happening. It's been in the shop a few times and they can't find the problem unless the light is on. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

The gasket has most likely failed. I am working with a customer right now with same issue. Although I cannot find a vacuum leak. The system has been run so lean that the plastic cowl on the underside of the vehicle has melted away. Running the vehicle in the shop for 20mins, and the exhaust manifold began to glow. The car came from a shop to my dealer. They installed many various parts/sensors, with no luck. I fear that the issue has prolonged and torched the valves. I hope they can leave it with me a little longer so I can really find out whats goin on. 2000 Accent 1.5 SOHC 125,000km
