Hey there, I just joined the forum the other day and mentioned that i've been having major problems with my engine....i shal explain....

It started off with a check engine light appearing about a year ago but the car has been running fine up untill about 4 months ago when i noticed that the idle had become very rough and acceleration was deteriorating. under heavy accelaration the engine started to develop a small missfire however under normal circumstances the car ran absolutely fine. Then within the last two months it suffered from a severe loss of power and wont rev above 4000rpm. when im driving along i have to feather the throttle and can use about 10mm of travel only otherwise the engine chokes and revs drop untill it nearly stalls. This presents major problems when i encounter hills, the engine has no torque whatso-ever and on motorways i struggle - reli struggle - to reach 70mph unless im going down hill. If for example im accelerating and the revs hit 4000 rpm the check engine light starts to flash and the revs drop to 1500rpm + car almost stops and i cant use the throttle (is this limp mode kicking in??). This morning i went out to the car and when i started it it kept stalling for about 1/2 hour untill finally batt went dead. charged battery and finally got it started with help from a 4.5litre v8 and some jump leads (45 mins it took!) however now the car will not rev above 1200 rpm and check engine light has dissappeared. Someone please help im at a loose end!!! thanks simon

p.s. there is also a very annoying rattle that only occurs between 2500rpm and 3000rpm and seems to be eminating from dashboard. y only at certain rpm? is it something to do with a specific engine vibration at those rpm or it it because that is the cruising (therefore most used) rev range??

you really need to get the fault code read by the scanner at your dealer to pinpoint the exact cause, possible culprits are maf sensor, throttle position sensor and crankshaft sensor. one other thing to check is a possible split in the plastic induction tubing between the air filter-maf sensor-inlet manifold

Its either a mass air flow sensor or the converter came apart and plugged the exhaust. Get the code read first, if its an p1128, replace the mass air sensor.

Hey this is for JClements, I received your email the other day. the problem with my car was the mass airflow sensor. i unplugged it and the car ran perfectly, not ideal to run for long so suggest getting replacement but for a quick fix just unplug it. engine will run like new however the light will remain on untill you plug the car into a code reader and clear the code.

look for the air intake at the front and follow the flexi tube into the airbox. just behind this is another flexi rubber tube with a sensor attached. leave the sensor in but unplug it untill you fit a new one. quick fix with two bolts and reccommend buying the real thing or a used one. do not buy an after market cheaper alternative or run the risk of a recurring problem.

About 2 months ago, i had the same problem. Changing spark plugs seemed to fix it. Two weeks ago it started again. I will try to do as you said. Can you tell me the price of new sensor (approximately)?
I thought it was a fuel filter, that was giving me trouble.
