Hi dave.
Without knowing the vehicle history or the extremes of temperature you operate under it would be foolish of me to make a diagnosis.
I don't know if you follow this regime but whenever I'm asked by people buying 2nd hand what they should do, I always recommend fully servicing the vehicle, once their motoring association has given it the all clear. That means, new filters(oil, air and fuel), new plugs, new leads, new radiator coolant, new brake fluid, wheel alignment, brake and suspension check and tyre pressures. While this may be seen by some as extreme, what it does do, is give you a reference point so YOU know when the last service was done and to what.
The rattle may be something as simple as top end start up wear brought about by inconsistent servicing. Have you changed the oil since buying the vehicle? Is it clean or black, slippery or gooey? Have you got the correct grade of oil? Is it good quality or woolies brand? Does the vehicle run hot or perfect? Is the engine fumy or smelly after running?
When was the timing belt changed? Is it due for change? Is the noise the timing belt slapping against the covers?
I'm not trying to worry you at all. It just relates to what I advocated at the start. If you've changed everything, you'd know the answer.
Try changing the oil to a good quality, proper graded oil and see if that makes any difference.
Hoping this helps a little.
Cheers,
Andrew
