I have an automatic 03 GTV6 with about 83,000 miles. Recently, I noticed that when I am at a stop light, holding my breaks, I feel my car lurch, like it's trying to shift into gear.

Also, this morning, I was at a stop sign, and when I released the break and pressed the gas, it revved up as though it were in neutral for about half a second, and then kicked into gear, causing me to peel out.

There was a cop behind me and I received an "exhibition of speed" ticket for losing traction with the ground. WTF!?

Anyway, I tried to explain what happened but the dude gave me a ticket anyway. Before I can contest this ticket to get it changed to a "fix-it-ticket" I feel like I should accurately diagnose the problem.

This behavior seems to occur mostly when the car is still cold in the mornings. Another item that might factor into this is that I got my transmission fluid flushed and replaced about 1,200 miles ago, but this problem didn't start until about 400 miles ago.

Anyway, I hope somebody can give me a little insight into this. Short of changing my oil and fixing electronic problems, I'm not very automobile savvy.

Dear Crick3t,

I have no experience with A/T problems on the Tiburon, BUT this sounds very similar to an A/T problem in a 2001 Sonata I own. The Sonata engine is a 2.4 liter, and I am not sure if the transmission is the same or not.

I was getting the same symptoms:

a) acted like it was in neutral on start
B) lurching on the 2nd to 3rd gear shift
c) acting like the transmission fluid level was low but was not

The dealer replaced the input and outoput sensors and this did not fix the problem. Eventually, the dealer replaced the throttle position sensor (TPS) and everything is fixed.

Did you get a Check Engine Light? The TPS can be tested before replacing, as it costs about $148 for the part.

If the fluid changed wasn't SPIII that would explain the behaviour.
It takes a few mile for damage to occur, yours started at about 800 miles after the flush. Were did you get your flush/fluid change done?

Bryon, no check engine light.

And Pelican, it was at a "Cheveron Oil Stop" I will inquire with them about what fluid they used and post.

warranty!!! You're still under warranty. Take it back to the dealer and tell them what's going on.

I read in another thread here that you can re-set the ECU. Is there a chance that that would solve my problem?

Well I feel stupid now. I went back to the Chevron Oil Stop for another oil change, and they checked the level of my transmission fluid and couldn't get any reading. I told them about the problems I have been having and that they started about 1500 miles after they had changed my transmission fluid. They told me that I should have brought it in sooner because they have a 30 day warranty on their work.

They filled my transmission fluid for free though, and the problem has gone away. I have been monitoring it for the last 48 hours and it doesn't seem to be leaking. My only idea is that maybe they didn't fill it up all the way the first time. I just hope there wasn't any damage done by driving around for so long with little or no transmission fluid.

::kicking myself for not checking for the obvious::

Get the shop to verify the problem with the fluid level, and confirm they had to add fluid. Take that to court with you regarding the ticket, to get that thrown out.

Im having problems going into 3rd gear. It has a bucking feel to it. As if the whole trans is jumping....Could it be the TPS, or do I need to flash the ecu?
