I really don't know much about working on cars but I am pretty handy with other stuff. Would an average person like me be able to replace the rear bearings in a 99 Accent? I don't want to get slammed at the stupid repair place.

Thanks for your time.

Dear registrationsucks<

Was registration really that hard?

go to hmaservice.com and register.

Click Shop
Enter Accent, 1999, your engine
Click Suspension System
Click Rear Suspension System
Click Rear Axle/Hub
Click Components

this is an 'exploded' view of the parts you will be working with.

Click Disassembly.

Steps to remove the hub. The rear hub assembly is a sealed unit. Buy new, remove the old, replace with new, torque to 130-159 lbs feet, easy. Should take you less than an hour using two jack stands and replacing both left and right rear hubs. I am not sure of the hub nut size, but should be between 22mm and 27 mm.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to take it in, because I have no way of tightening to a specific torque... Thanks anyway.

Hi Byron,

What do you use to tighten to a specific torque?

TIA

You need a torque wrench. They typically come in two flavors: (1) Beam and (2) "Click Stop". A click stop torque wrench will be more expensive, but much nicer.

A Torque wrench is juch like your socket wrench, the only differance is that it will make a sound (Click) when it gets to the specified force or normally foot poundage here in the U.S. that you have set it to.

A Torque wrench, simple tool about 30 to 40$ at sears. You can set it from 5 foot pounds to 150 at least on the one I have. Some Hyundai info is expressed in the Newton scale so you will have to convert it online. If you have a hard time doing that write to me and I'll help you out with the conversion.

You don't have to go crazy with the digital tool they sell, the mechanical tool has been around since the caveman and works as well or better then any they sell.

I hope this helps...

Gerald
