I have an intermittent problem with my 2002 Terracan. Sometimes after I turn the ignition on both the low and high 4wd indicators on the dash light up. In actual fact the 4wd has not been engaged and while these indicators are lit up the 4wd can not be engaged. Also while this is happening I can not get the auto transmssion to go into top gear. After a while, usually a couple of minutes, the indicators turn off and I can select 4wd successfully etc. I brought it to the dealership and they went through their diagnostic list until they came up with the answer that the 4wd motor was burnt out. Obviously this is not the case and once the code is cleared the problem does not occur for another few months.

Ок. Ploblem does not appear. But really forward axle is drive?
Or only indicator lit about it?

If 4WD really not engaged - check driver motor on transfer case and vacuum membrane on forward axle.

The lighting of BOTH 4wd lamps at the same time indicates a problem with the
E11/E12 Vacuum Solenoid ccts . I suggest you UNPLUG and REPLUG the connectors.
They are the two solenoids Adjacent to the ABS module. On switching on the ignition the ECU and other computers do POST's (PowerOnSelfTest"s) and part of that is to check the 4WD solenoids for continuity. (dont ask how, I dont know )

Cheers

Edit: it requires a POR (PowerOnReset, Ignition switch off/on ) to immediately reset the fault condition. 4Wd can not be selected, while this fault condition is present.
I have the feeling that if the ECU no longer sees the "original" fault after a while it will remove the check status and consider the fault condition fixed, hence normal operation resumes.
