I have a 2.5 tdi galloper exceed lx. Whilst driving down the motorway the engine started making a noise similar to something being stuck into an electric fan and being hit by the blades. The engine lost power and the sound gradually became a severe knocking from within the engine with very rough idle and sounding as if it were not firing on all cylinders. I didn't notice any excess smoke just the sound from the engine and loss of power. any ideas? Thanks

difficult to diagnose on the forums without hearing it, but l am affraid it does sound serious, you will need a compression check for starters and then go from there, find a mechanic you can trust

Dear wancho,

Something being struck by blades?
Severe knocking within the engine?
Very rough idle?
Sound like not firing on all cylinders?

Yikes! You have a serious problem.

First, just check the electric fan to see if the blade rotates freely. If there is nothing striking the blade, can we assume that this rhythmic metallic striking sound is inside the engine?

Every possible cause of a metal striking sound in the engine is bad...either bent valves, failed rod bearing, or severely damaged piston. All bad and expensive to fix. With the limited information given, it sounds like a piston failure.

Get your vehicle towed to the shop. they can turn the engine over by hand to see if you have metal striking metal, and tell you how bad your engine is damaged.

Hi there, Ive had exactly the same problem and i too thought it was the fan fouling on summat. Now excuse my non technical language but i took the top of the engine off, which is a quick and easy job, you just undo the bolts witha ratchet. then you find all the usal stuff cams and springs and all that jazz. Now there is a bar running accross the top of it all bolted in at either end of the engine, all tht had happened on mine was that it had come loose, i just tightened it up and the problem was fixed! I expect thats your problem as it sounds identical to mine.... Let me know how it goes!
