Hi everyone,
our 1litre automatic amica makes a hissing sound like something venting, it seems to be intermittant, but only does it when moving not when parked up. Any ideas as it is a bit annoying. Performance does not alter when it makes the noise and it is not constant.

We do not have the Amica in the US, but I have some reccomendations to diagnose your problem.
The hissing is present only when moving. Let's try to narrow down the location and speed range.
a) Find a light traffic stretch of four-lane highway B) Have 1 friend ride with you with the windows rolled down. Bring a pen and paper. c) Have a second friend in their own car drive alongside your car with their windows rolled down. d) Please note the speed the car is traveling when the hiss starts. This is the start of your noise range. Note the gear the transmission is in. Write it down. e) Accelerate until the noise subsides or dissappears. Note the speed and gear the transmission is in. f) Let the car coast down to below the first speed noted in d) above. Is the noise loudest during acceleration or during coasting? g) Accelerate until the noise starts again. have Friend #2 come along side on the right. have him listen to how loud the noise is. h) have Friend #2 come along side on the left. Is the noise louder on the left or right side. Turn the air conditioner on and off. i) Stop. Make a decision between the 3 of you if the noise is loudest on the left or right, is present during acceleration, is present during coasting, and the speed range of the noise. Does the noise get louder or quieter with the A/C on? k) Ask Friends 1 and 2 what the noise sounds like to them. Is it a sucking (vacuum) or a blowing (hiss)?
Open the hood. Start the engine. Look around for any obvious disconnected hoses. You are listening for a light hiss. have Friend #1 accelerate the engine with transmission in park. Do you hear the hiss? You are trying to determine if the hiss is or is not engine RPM related. If the hiss is not audible with the car in Park, and after accelerating and decelerating the engine you do not hear a hiss, this eliminates your engine as the source of the hiss.
Any loose hoses on the transmission? At the very least, you can now go to the Hyundai service center with some specifics on the noise. good luck.

the sound seems to come from the drivers side under the hood (bonnet), it is not there all the time, it is not affected by braking (do not think it is servo) I can not hear it when stationary if in park or drive. I suppose it could be a leak on a hose for the engine when under load or going over uneven ground. The car does not over heat and the air con works with no noise. It is real strange.

Dear gjp,
I don't have specifics on the Amica, so I could not give a specific answer on the number of hoses.
As a minimum, you should have two hoses...one hose sends hot transmission fluid out to a transmission cooler (looks like a small radiator but has no radiator cap), and one hose carries cooled transmission fluid back to the tranmission.
Just for giggles...check your fluid level in your automatic transmission with the fluid hot (drive for 10 minutes) and the transmission in park. Just an obvious source but check it anyway.
Also, is the hiss present with the air conditioner off?
Concur with brazzel on the wind in Scotland. The Romans gave up trying to conquer Scotland 2000 years ago because so many of the Legion caught colds, then pneumonia, and died in the effort.

Dear gjp, I checked out this site on the Amica: http://www.hyundai.co.uk/newCars/amica/technical/And I had this question: Do you have a diesel engine??? Because diesel fuel injectors require a special fuel pump that pressurizes the fuel galleries to 1200 to 1500 psi. And this can make a hissing noise. Byron
