Dear Tomlin,

Per the 1992 Scoupe owner's manual, your speedometer tops at 100 mph/160 kmph. The car is 15 year's old. The 1992 Scoupe only had a 1.5 liter SOHC engine.

How many miles do you have on this engine? Does it have visible gray smoke on startup? How about on a cold day below freezing? Smell like burning oil? Oily residue in the tail pipe?

What exactly is your compression on each cylinder? Realize that 100-110 psi is normal. If your engine measures in the 70-80 psi range, be glad that you can do 81 mph. Be glad that it starts!

How can you increase the speed? Swap out a 1.8 liter Beta or a 2.0 liter Beta II engine.

That is, I am ASSUMING that your timing belt is not worn past scheduled replacement, has broken off a few teeth, and skipped time. In which case, replace your timing belt before it slips time worse or breaks.

there is about 94048 miles on the original engine. yes there is grey smoke coming out of the tailpipe at start up. it starts fine in those temps. no burning oil smell i think. no oil resedue in the pipe.

there is about 94-98 psi, it fluxuates. it starts.

oh i checked the timing belt and it looked odd so i replaced it when i first got it. also i changed the other 3 belts.

oh and changing the engine is out of my budget.

A little white smoke on startup on a cold day means water vapor is condensing.

Bluish, grey smoke means the car burns oil...and how soon before the bluish grey smoke disappears tells you how badly the piston rings are worn. the exhaust also has a distinct burned oil smell, and leaves an oily residue in the tail pipe.

Dense white smoke that has a sickly sweet smell to it and continues after the first minute of running means you have a blown head gasket.

81 mph would be about right for a 15 year old scoupe, if you really want to go fast you should get mitsu 4g63 engine swap and maybe turn the boost up a bit that will easily get you beyond what your speedometer has listed as its maximum. Good luck
