I bought this 2000 Tiburon and it had a after market exhaust on it the problem I am having is it got the code p0422 and the dealer said the cat is bad and needs to be replaced. My question is how can I tell what converter is on there and will any cat work? The car seems to be loosing power and slow acceleration.

Do you have the factory cast manifold on your car? If so the cat is directly attached to that manifold. You will be able to see it just by opening the hood due to the cats unusually high placement in these cars.

Stealth,

taking off the cat will let your exhaust flow better which means a little more power and a small loss of torque in the low end but if you go for inspection and they do an emission test you will fail it which is a pretty big fine.

Removing the cat simply allows the car to breathe better but results in a lot more pollution. If your throwing a 0422 code that's usually Main catalyst effinciency below threshold (bank 1) which is basically saying your 02 sensor isn't getting enough exhaust flow to meet the set parameters. If you installed header you'd get this or an P0420 which is basically the same thing.

If the cat is bad you will notice the odor of exhaust fumes in the car and the noise level of the exhaust will be overly high. Aside from that you will feel the car kind of dragging ie: you press the gas and it doesn't accelerate as it should. If none of these then simply go 2 Advance Auto or some place w/ a scanner and clear the code.

BTW I'm sure people have already mentioned this but w/ new headers your better relocating the 2nd o2 sensor behind the cat so as to not throw a code.

Sorry offering my 2 cents b/c I had the same problem before.

One more thing, pretty much any cat will work granted it fits the dimensions of the exhaust pipe. If I were you go to ebay and get a high flow cat. I've got one on mine and no code and it passed emissions in NY
