Can someone tell me if it is an easy job to switch the speakers on an '08 Sonata? I have an SE but the audio is the basic 4 speaker setup and it needs better speakers to clean up the sound (I don't really want to replace the head unit at this time). Is it as simple as popping the grill covers and a few screws? Are they 6 1/2" speakers (front and back) as Crutchfield sugests?
THANKS for any help you can provide.
I realize it's been a couple of months and you've probably already done this, but just in case (and for other people's sake), here's the info you're looking for.
Easy is a relative term. It's not a back-breaking labor intensive job, but it will take you some time and a little patience.
The four door speakers are indeed 6 1/2" speakers. However, if you're ordering from Crutchfield, make sure they include
these speaker brackets. The holes in the door itself are about 7.5 - 8" in diameter, so a normal speaker bracket for 6 1/2" speakers will not work. They should also include Toyota speaker harnesses which SHOULD fit the factory connectors (I just wired mine directly.) You will need to add speaker baffles to your order (they won't include them) to protect the speakers from dirt and moisture.
As for installation, the speaker grilles on your doors are part of the door panel and do not come off separately. You will need to completely remove your door panels to get to the speakers. Once inside, you'll notice the factory speakers are riveted to the door. You'll need to drill out the rivets and redrill holes in the door to fit the new speaker brackets. Pay very close attention to the depth of your new speakers - you'll need to make sure they don't interfere with the window's travel.
The rest is fairly simple. Just install the new brackets, speakers and harnesses and reinstall the door panels.
Almost any aftermarket speakers will make the factory head unit sound MUCH better. The factory speakers are paper and have the smallest magnets I've ever seen on a speaker.
Plan on about 1-2 hours to get the job done. The first door will take the longest, but it goes pretty quick after that. Good luck with your install.
