A few weeks ago I started to hear an odd noise coming from right in front of me, just under the hood when I'm driving. It sounded like a far-away helicopter. My husband couldn't hear it and thought I was just being picky about my new car. So I ignored it as best I could, But since then it has gotten louder and louder to the point it is actually quite annoying and I'm about to take it in to my dealer.

When I am at a red light, it is most pronounced. I slip it into neutral and the sound seems to go away. In Park it is subdued too. But in D3 and Reverse and while actually in motion it is a very loud helicopter sound. Oddly, someone I know that I work with has the same vehicle, and has experienced the same exact sound under the same circumstances! He took his in and they tried to tell him it was a brake issue (it is definitely NOT) and next they blamed it on the fuse box cover under the hood. They tightened something, but the sound, though improved for a short time, has returned. I think it's notable that two people in the same town have exactly the same complaint.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM?

Thanks-- Leslie

I say take it to a dealer in a different town and hope for the best. There's no excuse for something like that in a brand new car. Good luck.

My fiancee and I just picked up, and dropped, off our new 2007 Hyundai Elantra Comfort Auto at the dealer. The first thing we noticed was the helicopter noise, very pronounced when your just idleing with no other sounds.

The finance manager claimed it was nothing, the sales guy admitted their was a noise and assured us it wasn't an issue. Needless to say we left it to be looked at.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what causes it? Is this normal - I would hope not for a brand new car?

We also started a 2007 Elantra Sport and couldn't here it.

Cory

Problem Solved:

It turns out that the clip for the ignition cable was loose causing it to vibrate off the engine. Quick fix and its good.

THANKS SO MUCH YOU GUYS!!!!!
I CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE BEEN DRIVING AROUND FOR 10 MONTHS WITH THIS NOISE AND NOW IT'S GONE, SO SIMPLY!!
I went in for my 2nd oil change and told them about the noise. They did the service and came back with, we can't hear the noise. I persisted, and had a guy come out with me and showed them specifically what I was talking about. I'd even mentioned the service bulletin Gus so kindly posted on here. "Oh, we have all the service bulletins, ma'am" I was told when I checked in, being brushed off. When I showed the tech who came out the clip behind the engine, he was very gracious, said he'd never seen that before and thanked me! He clipped the throttle cable in place and voila! Noise is gone. My car seems so quiet now.

Thanks again. This forum is great. :)
