Whenever you do your annual vehicle registration in the Philippines you have to do a pencil rubbing (they call it "stencil") of the engine number, which has posed a problem ever since I ran out of the rubbings I had my dealer do the first time I had the car brought in for the first 1,000 km. checkup. I simply rub one back onto the form.
I remember the mechanic telling me that he had to remove a heat shield and really reach into a deep recess. For my last registration, I just appealed to the registrar and the vehicle inspector helped me instead of getting himself burned reaching into the engine compartment for something that was not accessible without tools!
